Wow

Rob Instigator 04.22.2013 03:23 PM

Some years ago, a woman Gordon declines to name became a part of the Sonic Youth world, first as the girlfriend of an erstwhile band member and later as a partner on a literary project with Moore. Eventually, Gordon discovered a text message and confronted him about having an affair. They went to counseling, but he kept seeing the other woman. "We never got to the point where we could just get rid of her so I could decide what I wanted to do," Gordon says. "Thurston was carrying on this whole double life with her. He was really like a lost soul." Moore moved out. Gordon stayed home and listened to a lot of hip-hop. "Rap music is really good when you’re traumatized," she says.

DANG

Rob Instigator 04.22.2013 03:30 PM

Here is Thurston talking about his 2005 book, Mix-Tapes

Trying to control sharing through music is like trying to control an affair of the heart — nothing will stop it.

jennthebenn 04.22.2013 03:34 PM

He kept cheating while they went to counseling. Oh dude.

Genteel Death 04.22.2013 03:37 PM

“I never really thought of myself as a musician,” Gordon says. “I’m not saying Sonic Youth was a conceptual-art project for me, but in a way it was an extension of Warhol. Instead of making criticism about popular culture, as a lot of artists do, I worked within it to do something.”

This is one my favourite quote on the interview.

Give it another 10 years and we'll find out he's just another Jimmy Savile.

Rob Instigator 04.22.2013 03:40 PM

Is the aforementioned Thurston-lover this lady? Abby Banks?

Thurston helped her with the book PUNK HOUSE: Interiors in Anarchy

nancykitten 04.22.2013 03:42 PM

'Sonic Gossip' has never been so literal!

halgreen 04.22.2013 03:42 PM

I thought it would be Eva Prinz...
Besides all that I wonder if the debut Body/Head album discussed in the interview is the same as the LP/EP release.

Rob Instigator 04.22.2013 03:46 PM

From NY Times review of Punk House,

As Thurston Moore, a member of the art-house alt-punk bank Sonic Youth, who helped Ms. Banks find a publisher for her work and contributed an essay to the book, said recently: “It’s just a completely liberated aesthetic.”

Rob Instigator 04.22.2013 03:47 PM

I am going to use "find a publisher" as my new euphemism for makin' sweet love.

Genteel Death 04.22.2013 03:48 PM

Where is knox when you need her? Rob is already blaming the destruction of Sonic Youth on Phantom Yoko.

Rob Instigator 04.22.2013 03:59 PM

Don't tie me to the knox train tracks man! Kim is the one blaming! I am just researching!

Rob Instigator 04.22.2013 03:59 PM

If Kim G wants a May-December romance I am here. She is 59. I am 39. The difference will be made up for by my balls.

Genteel Death 04.22.2013 04:06 PM

You immediately put the emphasis and curiosity on the woman TM cheated on KG with, rather than on the feelings of the cheated and their relationship with their tormentor. You jumped on the Deathscalator. IT'S TOO LATE ROB.

Rob Instigator 04.22.2013 04:15 PM

the tribulations of the Instigator.

Kim G will rise above! RISE ABOVE! She is my Sonic Goddess!

Genteel Death 04.22.2013 04:31 PM

That's fine, Rob. What do you have to say about Thurston Moore being cheating scum though?

EVOLghost 04.22.2013 04:32 PM

Dood.....:/

Rob Instigator 04.22.2013 04:34 PM

I do not support his base actions. He is not Don Draper.

Genteel Death 04.22.2013 04:35 PM

Do you have any appropriate pictures of TM to make your point?

Rob Instigator 04.22.2013 04:41 PM

I do not. Thurston is a master media manipulator from the way back.

Genteel Death 04.22.2013 04:45 PM

No way he's a funny arsehole with it like Andy Warhol. For a start, he has his now ex-wife pretty much telling the world what went on behind closed doors. Andy Warhol was better at that sort of shit than he is.

Rob Instigator 04.22.2013 04:51 PM

He cannot talk because it would affect the divorce I bet. He wants to keep the chumbawumba collection.

Genteel Death 04.22.2013 04:54 PM

What will affect a divorce apart from being seen with another woman in public?

Rob Instigator 04.22.2013 05:00 PM

depends on the filing and the state it takes place in. if the divorce is a mutually agreed upon thing, it changes fast if there is public evidence of adultery. We are not privy to the particulars of it.

I think no one knows what happens between a couple. Two people share their own universe, and we are all just outsiders gawking.

I just hope that Kim does as she says she is and continues to make cool art and do art shows and such. she already makes cool t shirts. Let Thurston fade away playing folkrock crap, right?

raiinking 04.22.2013 05:38 PM

"Rap music is really good when yr traumatized!"
she is my fav forever FOR A REASON.
she's so fucking cool. I love her so much.
Can't wait for a body/head lp.
Does anybody else wonder if this is related:

I think we are. Every time something about your own private life is made known to the public by yourself, you are promoting its own scrutiny because that's what you want, deep down. Whether that's on FB, the media or Twitter, it doesn't matter. Everything you make visible to others out of your own choice and without the benefits you get from being anonymous will, variably, get some attention if you are popular because that's what you're after.

pantophobia 04.22.2013 09:50 PM

concerning today's news, I refer people who own No Setlist to page 159, the Maxwell's show in 2005, there is some interesting foreshadowing...

Aaaadrpk 04.22.2013 10:51 PM

Kim G will rise above! RISE ABOVE! She is my Sonic Goddess![/quote]

She will... more, but she already is RISE ABOVE.RISE ABOVE.

It is a forthcoming release actually, recorded and mastered at Sonelab Studio. Hoping for it to be released soon.

At least this takes some of the edge off "erstwhile"...

scott v 04.23.2013 08:52 AM

shit I don't have No Set List, not that its important but my guess on the "erstwhile band member" is Jim O'Rourke... weird. Couldn't be Mark Ibold...

skully 04.23.2013 11:09 AM

Thurston Moore? More like THURSTON WHOORE!

mmm ! i think thurston it's behind the flokrock crap you said . let me put me this way i prefer the noisys jams session of thurston ( now he has more time to do it ) than the noisy crap kim does ( yeah she's better with clothes )

evollove 04.23.2013 05:11 PM

She joined musician John Cale in his tribute to former Velvet Underground bandmate and muse Nico at the Brooklyn Academy of Music

Is there a recording of this?

evollove 04.23.2013 05:18 PM

And by the way, how the fuck do we get to the second page without anyone mentioning "Sleeping Around?" It's always been a "bad" song musically speaking, now it's a "bad" song ethically.

whorefrost 04.23.2013 05:28 PM

Feel a bit schmucky posting this http://jezebel.com/is-this-the-woman...ston-478479027

scott v 04.23.2013 06:35 PM

from one musician to another (I guess I'm right about O'Rourke) then Dutch royality and another musician...

I get the feeling that Ms Prinz will move on eventually, and Thurston will regret leaving Kim. I've seen it happen before (I'm getting old too...), older men ditching their significant others for "younger hipper chicks"... doesn't seem to work out long term in most cases, time will tell.
