Any New Year's resolutions?

The best way to keep your resolution is to plan ahead.

Chances are, at some time in your life you've made a New Year's Resolution - and then broken it. This year, stop the cycle of resolving to make change, but not following through. Here are 10 tips to help get you started.

Be realistic: The surest way to fall short of your goal is to make your goal unattainable. For instance, resolving to never eat your favorite desserts again could be a bad choice. Strive for a goal that is attainable.
Plan ahead: Don't make your resolution on New Year's Eve. If you wait until the last minute, it will be based on your mind-set that particular day. Instead it should be well planned before December 31 arrives.
Outline your plan: Decide how you will deal with the temptation to skip the exercise class, or just have one more cigarette. This could include calling on a friend for help, or practicing positive thinking and self-talk.
Make a "pro" and "con" list: It may help to see a list of items on paper to keep your motivation strong. Develop this list over time, and ask others to contribute to it. Keep your list with you and refer to it when you need help keeping your resolve.
Talk about it: Don't keep your resolution a secret. Tell friends and family members who will be there to support your resolve to change yourself for the better. The best case scenario is to find yourself a buddy who shares your New Year's Resolution and motivate each other.
Reward Yourself: This doesn't mean that if your resolution is to diet you can eat an entire box of chocolates. Instead, celebrate your success by treating yourself to something that you enjoy.
Track your progress: Keep track of each small success you make toward reaching your larger goal. Short-term goals are easier to keep, and small accomplishments will help keep you motivated.
Don't Beat Yourself Up: Obsessing over the occasional slip won't help you achieve your goal. Do the best you can each day, and take them one at a time.
Stick to it: Experts say it takes about 21 days for a new activity, such as exercising, to become a habit, and 6 months for it to become part of your personality.
Keep trying: If your resolution has totally run out of steam by mid-February, don't despair. Start over again! There's no reason you can't make a "New Year's Resolution" any time of year.

Fast Facts About New Year's Resolutions

63% of people are keeping their resolutions after two months.
67% of people make three or more resolutions.
Top four resolutions:
Increase exercise
Be more conscientious about work or school
Develop better eating habits
Stop smoking, drinking, or using drugs (including caffeine)
People make more resolutions to start a new habit, than to break an old one.

What a load of... I will NOT be making any new year's resolutions.

You?

nomadicfollower 12.23.2006 04:55 PM

Gulasch Noir 12.23.2006 05:12 PM

jon boy 12.23.2006 05:23 PM

Hip Priest 12.23.2006 06:05 PM

If you ever hung out with me you'd end up drink A LOT of tea. Well, either tea or french vanillas.

I'm not making a New Years resolution, because being the procrastinator that I am nothing will ever happen. I could quit smoking, or not...

Tea's so good! There's the best tea shop in the byward market and it's huge for being a tea store. I even have my own duck-shaped tea strainer. I plan to invest a lot into tea this upcoming year.

And you should try cutting down on smoking! I like it myself on occasion, just not all the time; I usually just smoke hand rolled pipe tobacco

racehorse 12.23.2006 07:27 PM

buy more music, read more books, watch more films, drink lots of coffee, grow my hair, and go to new york are what i am hoping to do in the new year.
my resolutions are suspiciously easy to keep. that's what's good about them.

schizophrenicroom 12.23.2006 07:38 PM

That's another one for me. I hate conforming to the whole capitalist, materialistic lifestyle that almost everyone falls into. If I only spent money on clothing, vodka, and the odd record every once in a while for the year, I could easily save over $10,000.

You don't need to lose a pound  Stop being silly.

Pookie, drinking flavored water may help you with that. I never ever drank water until the flavored stuff came out. Now I drink nothing but.

I actually really love plain water, I just forget to drink it while I'm at work.

Then I get really parched and your body mistakes thirst for hunger and I have cravings for fatty foods to quench the 'hunger'.

So I should just remember to drink more water.

Hey, I'll make a NY resolution.

Anngella 12.24.2006 01:27 AM

To take more pictures.
And to stay on top of school. I've been doing really good so far (last year's GPA: .333 this year's: 3.833) and I want to keep it up so I don't have to repeat any more classes.
I also kind of want to find a mate, but there's no way to go about doing that except for maybe being the town whore and my town blows so I won't blow anything here.

I don't like most flavoured water. Leaves a wierd taste in yr mouth... kind of metallic, as outlined in 1984.

HaydenAsche 12.24.2006 03:24 AM

My boss has offered me 300 euro's, if I do a stop smoking crash coarse. He also said that if I start again, he wants the money back. I've decided to drop the offer.

haha good for you. i like a man who knows his own destiny!

jon boy 12.24.2006 12:50 PM

its a tempting offer though isnt it? do you smoke much toko?

Tokolosh 12.24.2006 12:52 PM

A pack a day, so yes.
That place is in Amsterdam, and apparently they have a high success rate of people stopping with smoking, but I know myself, and I'll probably land up having to pay it back.

Edit: I find a way to stop, eventually.

Former resolutions : quit smoking.
I stuck to it. It was easy, I smoked 20 cigarettes a year.

This year, I wanna stop lagging behind.
To help that :

See the dentist to have a prettier smile; find a new outfit and drop my shabby 10 years old raincoat.
Thus people would look at me differently and I could get a job a bit more easily, if I have to face one more unsecure person who feels better facing well-dressed candidates.

Create some clothing. Starting by a t-shirt; give away the thing to print to a shop, feel satisfied by the result and encouraged to do my own with my own hands. Move on to shirts would be asking for too much.

Drop Dimeadozen (Rappard style) gradually, limiting myself to 1 GB per month. Guess I'll make an exception this summer when the Youth tours. This one is going to be hard. 1 GB is two shows. Might say 1,5. OK, 1,2.

Disappear from this board but stick to some of you who aren't just signs on my computer screen.

Use the time gained to write again, stay on focus, get played again by 2008, and fuck be published.

Sports in spring and summer with a pal or two to sweat out the anger of not getting good results easily.

Elect a president whose behaviour won't be a shame.

And stop pissing in the sink.

Edit : by the time I had typed this, Alex's Trip had written his resolutions. Takes courage for a young guy like him/you to do that. Hope you'll find a great way to get it out of your chest. One often feels frightened to be bold but it pays. It has paid and done good. Wish you the best.

Inhuman 12.24.2006 01:41 PM

Good call on creating clothing. I'm plannign on going to the paparwarehouse pretty soon and getting some T-shirt transgers whicha I want to get, but they're expeisince

schizophrenicroom 12.24.2006 01:55 PM

bertrand- best of luck to you in the new year :)

also, i'd like to actually start writing a story and finish it.
