What do you listen to when you're driving?

I got my license last week and I have yet to listen to Sonic Youth while driving. I have to share a car with my sister for a couple months and there's only her CDs in the car. So I was wondering what you all like to listen to while you are driving. Tell me whatever gives you the best driving experience; it doesn't have to be Sonic Youth.

marleypumpkin 04.15.2006 07:50 PM

Well, I usually don't listen to music in the car, unless I'm on my way to a big show. So, recently, Dinosaur Jr., & SY.

Driving listening to Sister is really amazing. Modest Mouse make good car music too.

marleypumpkin 04.15.2006 08:21 PM

yeah, now that you mention it, "Sister" is a good road trip album.

Really? I know some of the others haven't been too hot.
I like these one-run games we're winning though.

I'm not sure who Swervedriver are, but you're so right about nothing beating a nice drive. I prefer driving at night though.

Yep, Bedard is 3-0 along with Curt Schilling and he hasn't been giving up hardly any runs or walks. Now our other pitching is another story.....Cabrera is a loose cannon who ends up throwing at batters heads when he starts to get hit. Kris Benson has actually pitched really well even though the Orioles haven't scored many runs for him so he only has one win. Benson was a top pitcher in the Pirates organization a few years back before he got traded to the Mets, so I think he will be decent.....nothing spectacular though.

I think I have Frank Zappa's Bongo Fury in my car right now........

kingcoffee 04.15.2006 10:06 PM

I cannot even drive without listening to my music. It just irritates me. I always have to have music on in my car otherwise I get pissed. I listen to practically anything in my cd collection, evrything from Abandon Jalopy to Neil Young. Driving yr car and listening to music go together like goat cheese and turnips.

youthoftomorrow 04.16.2006 12:49 AM

FUCK, I WANT A CD PLAYER IN MY CAR!!!

i have a tape player in mine. my tape collection is pretty small, but i have some decent stuff: Dust, by the Screaming Trees ("Witness" is the best speeding song ever); Last Splash, by the Breeders; Ill Communication, by the Beastie Boys; To Mother, by the Babes in Toyland; and i just got NYC Ghosts & Flowers on tape (but i'm grounded at the moment, so i won't be driving with it for a while).

when i do drive a car with a CD player, i typically go with something pretty heavy, like Primus or White Zombie.

For some reason 'Swervedriver' and 'car' don't seem to mix so well.

Grete 04.16.2006 02:26 AM

uhm Patti Smith, , Radiohead, marlene Kuntz and..radio k-rpck sometimes

Gulasch Noir 04.16.2006 05:13 AM

I listen to all my old tapes. A few years ago i used to tape from radio. I also got to know sonic youth in this vein. My music tastes back than not always have been superiour, but I don't have an alternative anyway.

johnnywinternoshow 04.16.2006 06:02 AM

I listen to my mp3 player in my car through one of these

Samuel...I must reiterate that the "MMMM" in your signature still makes me think of you jerking off at the keyboard. Combined with your old name of "JiggleJiggly"...frankly, you worry me, boy.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand. Naturally it depends on mood. I've gone on about this before, but I quite like Mogwai during long drives on summer nights. Sometimes I throw on some Darkthrone, and that makes me pissy and I drive like a maniac. So don't do that. Anything fun to sing to is also a good choice. I was belting some Devo out the other day and got some odd looks, but they're great for a drive on a sunny day.

Wait, what am I telling you this for? Here's a simple suggestion: put your own CDs in the car, and, like, listen to 'em.

jon boy 04.16.2006 08:31 AM

mood is all important.
personally sun city girls is a good one. or superwolf. to be honest i can think of so many things that are good to drive to that i cant list them all here. as truncated said, if i put on anything to aggressive or loud or energetic then i end up driving like a real fuckhead.

i have noe actually driven for several years owing to a very bad accident i got into so this is based on when i did or being a passenger which is quite a different experience to driving.

selfobsessedandsexxee 04.16.2006 08:47 AM

drivng music.

mary timony -exhex on cd.(discman)
sleater kinney- call the doctor on cassette.

marleypumpkin 04.16.2006 08:56 AM

youthoftomorrow:

They have those cassette adaptors that you plug into a discman. So, you don't have to go & buy a cd player. But if you want the nice look of an installed cd player, go to Circuit City. If you buy a cd player that's $100 or more, they install it for free. Just thought I'd help out.

PunkerViolence 04.16.2006 10:20 AM

I dont drive yet, cos im 16. But if i did, id surely whack on some NOFX, punk in drublic :P.....or something upbeat and fast. Sister would be cool too, or daydream nation.

h8kurdt 04.16.2006 10:46 AM

As I said before nothing beats Ciccone Youth when night although driving to Madonna 'immaculate collection' is great when driving to a party.

CHOUT 04.16.2006 03:15 PM

Anything and everything, since that's where I listen to the most music.

Savage Clone 04.16.2006 03:15 PM

Riding in the back of the short bus doesn't count, CHOUT. The thread is specifically about DRIVING.

youthoftomorrow 04.16.2006 03:17 PM

marley:

i know about those adaptor things. unfortunately, i do not have the funds to buy anything at the moment (i think i have a grand total of $18 to my name, and i need some new books). and when i do get some cash, i'm gonna save up for a new car stereo.

but, thanks anyway.

Hey punk, at least I don't have to worry about car insurance and speeding tickets. The bus driver lets me turn the thing to open the door sometimes too, just for fun.

Savage Clone 04.16.2006 03:40 PM

Yeah, but only when he lets you out of the straitjacket.

qprogeny79 04.16.2006 04:09 PM

you should try driving the interstate with the windows down and classical blaring out the window sometime. liszt, js bach, and handel are particularly suited for this purpose -- the contrast between the balanced symphonies of the music and the cacaphony coming from the other cars is so jarring.

marleypumpkin 04.16.2006 04:48 PM

youthoftomorrow:

same here bro. I've had my cassette adaptor for like 5 years, give or take.
& I haven't bought a new album in fucking forever. That's why I get urked when I see the "Last Album You Bought" thread.
(no offenst to schizo, she's my girl)

aprogeny79

That is a great idea. I hadn't thought of that before. People always want to BUMP their car stereo's. Well, the mixture of the outdoors ("window down"),
& great classical music like the composer's you have listed is much better than standard music like rock or hip-hop.

krastian 04.16.2006 04:53 PM

I just got a cd player for my car a few months ago. When I was in high school I'd drive my parents 84 Mercury (a huge old woman car) and it only had a radio. So for a long time it was just oldies and acoustic blues for me.....which was fine.

Inhuman 07.08.2006 09:25 AM

I listen to Rap and Hardcore stuff when driving. Occasionally the light indie rock if I'm in a drowsy mood. Lots of Dr.Dre, NWA, Dalek, Pavement, Sigh, and Refused

Bunbury 07.08.2006 09:27 AM

classical/CBC 1 or 2
favorite radio show: heres to you with shelly solmes

PAULYBEE2656 07.08.2006 09:57 AM

depending on my mood. in the car at the moment is rather ripped, godspeed you b e, cocteau twins, the kinks collection, the idiots (amazing irish indiedrone band of yore), negativlands big 10-8 place, chris morris on the hour radio shows, and every neurotics podcast shows....
