Binge Watching Television

So now that our society is reduced to factory farmed human commodities drowning the sorrows of their impoverished isolated lives in front of screens for 72 hours in a row shovelling junk food in their mouths and developing serious back problems, what tv shows do you like to binge watch?

The ones everyone knows:

The Wire
Breaking Bad
True Blood
Sopranos
Battlestar Galactica
Homeland
Dexter
Walking Dead
Mad Men

What else is good?

Toilet & Bowels 09.25.2013 12:53 PM

Game of Thrones
Homicide Life on The Street
Twin Peaks (first 12 or so episodes)
Buffy & Angel
Generation Kill
X Files
24

Rob Instigator 09.25.2013 12:59 PM

Only shows I have binge watched.

Deep Space 9
Mad Men
Breaking Bad
Game of Thrones

I argue with my wife about this all the time. I actually prefer to watch an episode and then let time pass, to absorb it, and to ruminate on it, and then watch another episode. watching shows back to back to back, even great shows, tends to blur the story arc in ways I do not like. All TV is episodic, some more than others, but this "break" between episodes I think makes the shows better.

Genteel Death 09.25.2013 01:27 PM

Masterchef
Keeping Up Appearances
The Wire
Twin Peaks
Louie

Nefeli 09.25.2013 01:27 PM

didnt know the binge watch expression.

my top 3 hasnt changed.
twin peaks (the 1st time wasnt binge watched)
buffy
six feet under (first 3 seasons not binge watched).

will come back when i think about the next top 3s
perhaps i dont have next top 3s
but i surely agree with your intro on the subject :(

Nefeli 09.25.2013 01:29 PM

ah black mirror was genius - but not binge watch material.

from last year, i liked 'the americans', 'game of thrones' of course, 'the killing', 'bron/broen',

Agreed.

Of the comedy shows I re-watch often Alan Partridge's Knowing Me Knowing You takes the top spot. I wouldn't say I watch that much TV though. Even with films I'll go through phases of watching tons and then nothing for a while or just 1 or 2 in a month.

Nefeli 09.25.2013 01:40 PM

noted.

(ill keep editing previous post).

i dont watch the telly either, but i do spend tons of hours on series and although i feel bad about it -should watch interesting and inspiring movies instead- i m a lazy bastard and dont do much to fix this.
lately im binge (binge-binge-binge!) watching big bang theory on the side, because it makes me laugh and it relaxes me before i go to sleep.
also cant wait to watch arrested development 4. hope its brilliant as the previous seasons.

dead_battery 09.25.2013 01:46 PM

arrested development, theres another one to d/l

!@#$%! 09.25.2013 01:57 PM

dead_battery 09.25.2013 02:00 PM

xavier renegade angel
sealab 2021
red dwarf

Genteel Death 09.25.2013 02:07 PM

Sanjivani
OZ
Holby City

dead_battery 09.25.2013 02:09 PM

masterchef? holby city? stop trolling.

Toilet & Bowels 09.25.2013 02:10 PM

I have never developed proper good taste in TV shows. Trust me if I say I'm sparing you the worst of what I watch and enjoy on TV sometimes.

Rob Instigator 09.25.2013 02:17 PM

Oh yeah The wife and I binged on

Peep Show
The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret

Genteel Death 09.25.2013 02:19 PM

Bad Girls

I watched that entire series many times in the past. Summer Heights High too.

Rob Instigator 09.25.2013 02:36 PM

I could watch this all day.

dead_battery 09.25.2013 03:35 PM

EVOLghost 09.25.2013 04:08 PM

Tthere's only two showed I've watched the series entirely....(Xavier and Champloo) and both were awesome.

Rob Instigator 09.25.2013 04:18 PM

hey, if anyone had been watching big bang theory, i have a question.
i liked the firefly references. i liked that it was mentioned, so maybe someone would check it out.
but i wondered because of smth else, is it supposed to be friendly references, or ironic? friendly, right?

I haven't watched it. It comes off as friendly references. It supposed to be one of those nerd shows.

!@#$%! 09.25.2013 06:30 PM

just finished s3 of boardwalk empire and it was satisfying. while not as thrilling or raw as other more popular shows that already have been mentioned to death, i like the "whole universe" approach and the numerous characters in it.

forgot to mention, HOMELAND. first season was pretty great, waiting for discs of season 2; 3 is about to come out o tv.

demonrail666 09.25.2013 07:25 PM

Going through a marathon Nashville season 1 binge. I don't even really like it but I'm up to the last disc so I have to see it to the end.

!@#$%! 09.26.2013 08:17 AM

oh, i just remembered, tremé.

was just listening to "hu-ta-nay" and remembered i love this show.

yes, it's not as beastly as the wire (same production team), and yes, dj davis is an annoying character (he gets better), but all around it's a good show, a slow-cooking kind of delicious thing.

and then besides all that good storytelling and characters you have a kind of music like this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tIq81jlqXA

FUCK YES.

Rob Instigator 09.26.2013 08:26 AM

I tried watching Boardwalk Empire with the wife. I was so bored. I stopped after three eps. I couldn't give any less of a fuck about those characters and their fictionalized problems.

Bytor Peltor 09.26.2013 08:46 AM

Back in January when my father-in-law was in the hospital and I was staying 12 hours at a time, this is when I started watching, Breaking Bad

Talking about binging!

Trama 09.26.2013 01:29 PM

I don't know what's the general feeling about Kevin Spacey, but I've managed to watch the first series of House of Cards. I liked it overall but felt a bit disappointed with the plot developments towards the end of this first season.

i love him, but with the series i wasnt that amazed.

also..from the middle and on, i had this feeling of him being overexposed.
like when you see smth extremely beautiful too much, too often, smth is not working right.
it was worth it however, for the 'him and us' scenes.

floatingslowly 09.26.2013 07:22 PM

Much like spacealiens who've assimilated Earth culture via old I Rove Rucy reruns, I've been scanning Aussie TV in an attempt to spake the language...mate.

Fuck if it's not 85% American voices.

pony 09.26.2013 07:35 PM

oh no, you just missed winners and losers! i think the season finale was tonight! SO AUSSIE lol

zomg I fucking love this show. really fulfills my yearning for watching closeted bogan lesbians moaning about their problems and then chowing down with their post-spice girls friends because that's what gals are all about.

the one with the red hair is my favourite, she looks so nice. I just want to hug her.

OH SHIT I JUST REALISED THE ONE WITH THE HAIR AND THE NOSE WAS THE DOCTOR FROM ALL SAINTS GAHHHHH loved all saints.

I'm going to start binge-watching BatB and dynasty, especially the latter (the bold is really annoying me right now, I just want hope to fuck right off, liam doesn't want you).

pony 10.01.2013 11:54 AM

I love the skinny blonde one, she is so annoying

afterthefact 10.12.2013 12:15 PM

Breaking Bad
Twin Peaks
A lot of Battlestar Galactica, until the end was spoiled for me right around a slow point in the series, so I just threw in the towel on that one
Oh, and Portlandia, as each season gets released on Netflix.

Other than the occasional show like this that I binge on (which admittedly absorbs me for days/weeks), I pretty much only watch The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, and SNL - even though the latter is more ritualistic for me, since it's just something I've always watched, regardless of it's ups and downs.

I know these don't count, but I'm only bringing it up because of the statement made by dead-battery in the original post. I'm sure it wasn't a 100% honest assessment of his feelings, but it clearly reflects how a lot of people seem to view entertainment. I like the new set up that we have for shows now. I don't get dragged in to just lazily sitting around a watching whatever is on. I choose exactly what I will watch, watch it, and move on.
