Thurston on cover of Big Takeover

It's a great interview. Jack Rabid played with Thurston back in 1981 or so in Even Worse, and they reminisce a lot about the punk/hardcore scene back then. It's not online, but you can pick it up at most major bookstores and newsstands, or subscribe. Great magazine as well.

Just Music. 30 years going now. Pretty amazing, to be honest. I can't think of another indie music magazine that's been going longer.

The NME has been published weekly since March 1952.

Innumberable music publications have come and gone since March 1952, yet the NME is still alive and kicking. It must be doing something right.

I was referring to independently operated music magazines in the US, which have been dropping like flies of late. The NME's far bigger than Big Takeover , and for such a small magazine to survive for so long on such a meager budget is pretty amazing.

there is also a great remembrance piece in the front editorial section from Tim Sommer, recounting his early days in Even Worse. I didn't realize that he was also in the Swans at the beginning.

Er, NME is owned by one of the largest magazine publishers in the country, how is that independent?

All that means is the NME has a larger distribution.

What is it about the NME that draws you to it so much, in comparison to other magazines?

It was the NME that introduced me to the alternative music scene. I didn't even know an Indie chart existed until I started reading it. I was like "what the hell is this?" It piqued my interest on who the bands were and what they sounded like. If it wasn't for the NME, I wouldn't have known about Sonic Youth, for example.

Have you been reading it a long time?

Yeah. At present I don't read it as often, especially now the local library has stopped stocking it to save a few bob. I'm lumbered with Q magazine, which I don't like.
