Walls Have Ears listening party
Hi folks, just a reminder that they're doing a listening party for Walls Have Ears today at 11:30 PST, just over 2 hours from now.
https://sonicyouth.bandcamp.com/merc...istening-party Thurston, Lee, and Steve should be present with some guests. I'm not sure how these things work, but they'll be streaming the album in its entirety and doing some sort of chat? (shameless self promo - later today or tomorrow there will be a new 'song of the week' that is somewhat relevant to this release, and coincidentally the return of a classic board member) |
Please say it's khchris

thanks for the heads up Chris, I was able to catch the last part. Now back to basketball, women's Belgian team is beating the USA :-)
|
Was good crack. Sneaky to drop a new variant during it, wasn't planning on spending another £60
|
good bandcamp listening and good chatting

Wow, 2002 flashbacks like a muh'fucka. |
Damn, I missed this. Was working. Is there a way to relisten to it? What was the craic?
|
I was busy, but Jenn was giving me the chat highlights of the listening party
The chatter with the Billy Gibbons story really reminds how Neil Young loved Expressway as well |

I just now tried to reopen the listening party site, but you get redirected to the bandcamp album site |
There was some nice info from L & T like finding out the lyrics for World looks red were written by Michael Gira and Lee writing Ghost bitch on an acoustic with tons of feedback. T declaring the exact address where he wrote the I'm Insane lyrics witch is rather suspicious given his erm, memory... prowess.
Other notable chat contributions from the randos' were: Ohio is an underrated state, It's just being taken over by the Chads. StreamXsonic Subway is an underrated song. The word underrated has lost all meaning on social media at this point. I asked T about his techno album reveal possibility, to no response. This thing's secrecy is more heavily guarded than T's love life. I noticed a couple of OG SYG heads, Sergisonic and Scottv. For the fallen comrades I raise a toast of beer . Quote:
I noticed something different but couldn't quite put my finger on it. What was the variant? |

Was thinking this would be them giving talking points about the tour and songs. Was still interesting with the chat. Fast-paced and hard to keep up.
Also, really curious how my audio kept cutting out for all of the Expressway songs. Quite unfortunate; was really looking forward to those. My internet was fine, but it kept losing audio and coming back, and only for those songs! Also interesting tidbit from the band was the "Sream Tape." The screaming at the beginning of Ghost Bitch, as used in concerts, was a recording of Lee and Thurston screaming in a steel silo, while waiting for Steve on tour somewhere. |
i missed this the other day, scheduled smack in the middle of my workday
is there an archive of it or something? - looks like someone got jam on their keyboard? could not see more :( - also could someone here tell the story of the banned cover mentioned at the start? puerto rican who? im confused, sounds like they were talking about surfer rosa, which... was in the future? lol i have no ide also what's the story of the alternative song titles? any mentions of them? thanks in advance.... |
Jams run free.
There really ought to be some sort of archive with the chat! It goes by blazingly fast and is hard to keep up with. The alternative song titles were mentioned by Steve in the recent article posted. From the article: " Where did these alternate track titles come from? They came from the people who made the bootleg – it was a very standard thing at the time. Like, if you had a bootleg that had two songs with the same title you would rename the second song. So often there’d be fake names on bootleg records. People were always trying to run from the publishers and that sort of thing." |
The speech at the start is referring to the Flower 12".

re: titles, i read yesterday but could not reply. spahn ranch dance is a very funny name again thanks & thanks |

Thurston's book also expands on the background of the sleeve, and the composition of Flower itself: basically, the calendar image (with T's annotations) came first, while Kim's additional verse (the "new girl in your life" one) is her skewering the naivety of his post-feminist rationalisation of it. It was one of my favourite parts of the book, and due credit to him for including it. |
I had Walls Have Ears on a bootleg cassette I bought on ebay in the early 00s. Lost it, but struggling to muster up the enthusiasm to purchase another copy of a bootleg the band themselves regarded subpar.

That superlative-sounding 2006 show in Portland needs an official release. I'll take a Bandcamp download-only thing if physical is not an option. Now, everybody else here hates Rather Ripped, but so what, you're ALL wrong.

im still curious about how she came to be "puerto rican." because in the case of surfer rosa it is documented. here, maybe we'll never know ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ anyway many thanks for replying Quote:
i do though :o sorry xD but there's definitely an audience for it. even among fans of other eras because live sets are something else... regardless of what the album was ("not for me"), live sets were always mindblowing in the latter years |
