Top 5 Movies With a Twist Ending
It came up in convo with friends. We were talking about how great movies can have these incredible unpredictable turns at the end of the movie and we started rattling names off. I'd be interested to see what people here consider the best twists in cinematic history.
my list: -Memento -A Clockwork Orange -American History X -Easy Rider -Godfather II |
haha the empire strikes back.

ten twisty endings
The Empire Strikes Back (no haha from me...this is the best "twist ending") Easy Rider Vertigo 2001: A Space Odyssey Rosemary's Baby Wild at Heart A Clockwork Orange The Prestige The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys 12 Monkeys While not a twist necessarily, Dr. Strangelove has quite the memorable non-standard ending. Other movies based on books that should be mentioned include Blade Runner and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, although the "twist" would not be surprising to one that has read the book that has been adapted. I included 2001: A Space Odyssey anyway because Kubrick's filmic ending breathes life into Clarke's words. It's lovely to see no mentions so far for the obvious dreck like Fight Club or (heaven forbid) The Sixth Sense. |
*Cough*
Raising Cain Arlington Road Psycho Lost Highway Planet of the Apes Seven Fight Club Adaptation The Butterfly Effect The Shining Citizen Kane (Best twist ever) The Shawshank Redemption Donnie Darko A Simple Plan Being John Malkovich |
LA Haine. There are many more but that remains a very bitter twist to a tale.

OH give me a fucking break! Fight Club is a fucking awesome movie, and the ending is awesome. I have been meaning to watch 12 Monkeys since we got it at x-mas. Soooon... |
Shawshank...a Simple Plan...great ones!
And Citizen Kane & Planet of the Apes are pretty famous twist endings. I was thinking about including Psycho, but since there is a twist in the middle as well as the end, I didn't. Woe is me. It's my number three movie ever. on a side note> I guess Unforgiven is sort of a twist ending, but bearing in mind it's a Clint Eastwood movie, you do expect it. It's still one of the best movies ever made, however. thanks for playing |

Since I figured out the end for both of these movies (Fight Club and The Sixth Sense) before the "twist," they are disqualified from recognition as a "top 5 movie with a twist ending." 12 Monkeys pretty much twists and turns throughout. |
I agree with atari in that The Fight Club doesn't say anything about anything.I might be wrong but i also find Quentin Tarantino to be a useless film director too. It's just my opinion but i value it as it's mine.

The Departed had kind of a twist ending.
|
I dont really see Shawshank Redemption as having a twist ending. Everyone gets what they deserve. The warden commits suiide, the gurad is arrested and Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman live the happy life in Mexico. It's a great ending, but how is it a twist?

Every filmmaker has his haters. Look at what happened to David lynch on that other thread.
The Shawshank Redemption's twist lies in the bookkeeping. |
Definately not one of the best, but I recently saw "derailed", and was quite shocked, and impressed! Better than I thought it would be..

David Lynch...he wrote and directed my favorite film, but he's not my messiah. He hasn't made anything worth a shit since 1990, well, then again, I like The Straight Story. Ladies and Gentlemen, those of you who think Gus Van Sant has been a huge disappointment, I direct your attention to one Mr. David Lynch. |
others:
A TALE OF TWO SISTERS Dead Man's Shoes Chinatown |
Yeah, I wasnt too impressed with Mullholland Drive. Kind of a hack script. Good acting though.
