Is there a way to trick my computer into thinking I have a joystick?
I downloaded TIE Fighter, and I figured I could play with my keyboard. My motherboard is not compatible with gameports, and I don't have a USB joystick. :(

you're screwed....but i think you can play with mouse and kayboard, actually, it's been a few years, i can't remember if it was x-wing or tie fighter....sorry.. :(

You won't be able to play all that well with keyboard commands. The game is a good flight simulator, and, as you've noticed, has many controls. Years ago, I used to do the online multi-player at the Microsoft gaming zone for X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter.
By the way, I was one of the few people who flew the X-Wing mostly; they are better than the zippy A-Wings and (popular) TIEs if you fly them properly. I've played X-Wing and TIE Fighter a couple of times, but X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter (& the Balance of Power upgrade) is the only PC game I've ever gotten into for a time. ![]() |

But playing with keyboard can work 'cause I used to do that with X-wing Alliance, before having a joystick. |
But it is nice to have a joystick with programmable buttons right there at the top of the stick. For instance, if any enemy ship gets behind yours, you go into a loop and try to reverse the position or at least elude the tail. Everyone, of course, does this. One of my joystick buttons was programmed to cut the engines to half-speed, so, as I was looping, I would alternately press full throttle and half-throttle back-and-forth, and this would usually put me behind the ship that was tailing me within a a few times looping.

You're a great Rebel pilot, atari. Which joystick do you use ?

I used to use an Eliminator joystick, but it got stolen along with a bunch of other things. It was blue-greenish gray with red programmable buttons at the top of the stick. I don't think they make the model anymore. I tried to get back into the game and purchase a microsoft joystick with a big base, but took it back because it didn't play like the other one.
Ender at the gaming zone invited me into RSQ, Rogue Squadron. This was before any Rogue Squadron comics or games too, but there had been the one book by Stackpole. Anyway, we kicked Imperial ass and ruled that board. |
Mine was a Microsoft Precision Pro. Not so bad. Did you try X wing Alliance ? Great simulator, very beautiful, with a hard campaign. I burned a hundred of Star Destroyers !!
It was a good time... |
![]() appreciate this joke, it took me 5 minutes |
I should, but I haven't. Your "hard campaign" description makes it sound fun.
I can just remember when Balance of Power came out and how grateful I was to have new stuff to do on the game because I liked it so much. I was always hoping that LucasArts would come out with one that had an even better live multi-player than X-WvTF and also put together a mini-movie of campaign missions or of an online multi-player dogfight that you could view afterward. |
You're a great magician, guy !
Thanks. |

Still waiting... I have Battlefront II on X Box, but battlespaces are ridiculous compared to X wing. Just funny. |
