He's an overrated celebrity but an underrated actor, IMO. He has far too much power in Hollywood, though.

top gun is the greatest movie ever made.

I thought Ghost Protocol was fun as hell.

Antagon 03.03.2015 05:02 PM

Generally a fine actor. It's just that his bizarre public appearances became his defining trait some odd years ago. Behind all this Scientology mumbo jumbo and the tabloids there's still a legitimately talented actor. Thought he was great in The Collateral. Saw Edge Of Tomorrow last year at the movies. It wasn't phenomenal but at least very enjoyable.

I watched edge of tomorrow last nite and like oblivion i thought, "hey this aint great but it ain't bad either!" My favorite is Last Samurai

Yeah, it was entertaining while it lasted. Haven't seen Last Samurai yet.

rebeccagotcursedout 03.03.2015 07:23 PM

"did you fucking fart Raymond?"

"yeah"

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 03.03.2015 07:27 PM

Last Samurai is a truly great film that happens to star Tom Cruise doing some surprisingly great acting

Alright, think I'll have to give it a shot then. Have you seen Magnolia?

A great description. Agree, but not with the 'surprising' bit. TC is never bad in a role, even in Eyes Wide Shut (I used to hate him in that but el symbols convinced me otherwise). He's a very good actor but his general persona can be really irritating. He's not 'likeable', which makes him a hard sell in nice-guy roles. Am I the only one who thinks the Bond franchise has missed the world's biggest trick in casting him as a villain?

Agreed he is a very Bondian villain, he could be a Bond version of Chris Walken villains

demonrail666 03.03.2015 11:35 PM

Yeah but Walken would always pitch it towards comedy. Best thing you could tell Cruise during a rehearsal is that he should try to pitch it towards likeable and he'd give you the most kill-it-with-fire scene on earth. The guy's never more horrible than when he's (in his mind) trying to be nice.

EDIT: And while we're on the subject. Idris Elba will be the next James Bond. It's as close to a sure thing as i can think of right now.

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 03.03.2015 11:47 PM

I meant in the sense of using tone and facial gestures.. walken is to crazy to be a true bond villain but tom cruise is a bit more "classy" in the Bond sense.. and yes, tom cruise trying to be "nice" is perfect bond villain because he really comes across more so as being insidious

If there's anything wrong with his performance in Magnolia it's that he's trying to be a cunt when it's blatantly obvious that's what he is anyway. Imagine a director asking you to play yourself, it'd always come across a little off. If only because of vanity and lack of self recognition (probably merged). It's why I think every director, if they want him to play a villain, should privately keep telling him he's actually the film's hero.

EDIT: If I was 20 years younger I'd walk into hollywood right now and be the most powerful casting director in the whole fucking town. My insights are pure box-office gold.

EDIT 2: I've just drunk a bottle of Brandy
