Whats Lee Ranaldo's solo material like? Is it anything like the songs he does for Sonic Youth, or like any songs in particular (i.e. are we talking Wish Fulfilment or In the Kingdom #19)

Not really, although spoken word is often an element. Most are fairly drony w/Ranaldo-tones every now & then and a more primitive, riffy drum sound.

I really like the set w/ Corsano and Bill Nace for the No Fun Fest last year.

go with east jesus first as n introduction, then amarillo ramp and slowly enter the butowski stained world of eternity. text of light is real interesting too. dirty windows is also a great album!

hmmm, drone, ambient, loops, poetry, crazy soundscapes (most of his solo stuff) , don't know how to describe it, he does other stuff as well. one of the greatist solo artists, really. I like (almost) everything he does.

Solo Lee is marvellous.

Give Amarillo Ramp a shot - some great stuff on there, probably the most SY-like of his releases, if that's what you're looking for (although still not that SY-like)

Lee's solo stuff is very cool he has put out many great solo albums over the years.
