Goodbye 20th Century, Hello new Sonic Youth biography
March 28, 2007

David Browne, author of the forthcoming Sonic Youth biography gave saucerlike these exclusive details on his project:
"Hi Moshe: Since you asked about my book, here's the current skinny. with all due respect to previous volumes, I'm at work on what I hope
will be a definitive biography of this undeniably important and influential band, to be published by Da Capo in the U.S., Piatkus in the U.K., and Kiepenheuer & Witsch in Germany. The release date should be 2008, but since I'm still working on it, don't hold me to that year just yet. Although I've interviewed and written about Sonic Youth since 1988, in publications ranging from Musician magazine and Entertainment Weekly to the New York Times, the book will feature all-new interviews with the four principals, who are supportive of the project (not to mention very patient with my endless questioning) and have given me access to their vast archives. The book, which has the working title "Goodbye 20th Century," will also encompass interviews with nearly 100 friends, fellow creative travelers, family members, former band members (all the ex-drummers), and producers and record executives who have worked with the band over the last quarter century. Everyone from Thurston's mom and Harold Paris to Jim O'Rourke will be heard from. As for me, this will be my third book, the first two being "Dream Brother: The Lives and Music of Jeff and Tim Buckley" (2001) and "Amped" (2004), a history of extreme sports. If I were to ponder a connecting thread between all these books, it would probably have something to do with maintaining one's integrity in an overcommercialized world, but I'll leave the analysis to others.
Anyway, wish me luck."

Well, Good Luck David!

Actually David Browne is very nice. He seems to really enjoy writing about SY.

I got that impression when I first read about him writing the book. I'm looking forward to seeing it.

Next time you're in contact with him, please let him know that I'm offering him my services as a proof-reader.

ah, this sounds fantastic..
what's happening w/ psychic confusion, anyone know?

sonicl 03.29.2007 04:17 PM

Last thing I heard was that its release was delayed while ET was finishing his Nirvana book, which was due to come out first.

sonicl 03.29.2007 04:41 PM

I've emailed the publishers of the Everett True book, will post their reply when (if?) it comes.

That's a real shame. although I'm not a huge fan of ET's writing, he has a definite position regarding the whole 'indie' thing. I'd imagine that he'd be pretty Kim-Thurston-centric, with little interest in either Lee or Steve.

Regarding the Nirvana book, I know he used to be a real CL fan, so it's going to be interesting to see how he tackles THAT hot potato.

Who is Harold Paris?

kingcoffee 04.02.2007 12:28 AM

Can't wait to read that book.

Toilet & Bowels 04.02.2007 07:36 AM

everett true is an fool, i'm glad he's not doing an SY book anymore

sonicl 04.02.2007 07:39 AM

I'd say ET's more a twat than a fool. Fool suggests that the person concerned cannot help but be the way he is. I think ET's the way he is through choice, which is far worse.
