long live the beatles

Lee talking about the beatles

Ranaldo: 'I chose the first American Beatles record, 'Meet The Beatles', because it was the beginning of this intense cultural wave for everyone. For me it was the beginning of this long interest in music that's come all this way to where I am right now. It all started with them, because you can move from their music in all different directions. You can move straight through rock and roll, up through to punk, you could go back to Chuck Berry, you could jump over to Cage, Stockhausen and Varèse. The Beatles were at the nexus when all of those things were coming together. It was an interesting period that they kind of tapped into and triggered in a way, their records started so simple and then progressed to these complex symphonic masterpieces. We could start a really long discussion and travel all through 20th century music and their place in it and pop music's place in 20th century music.'

I knew most of this before, except the part about it being played live before it was released.

I still go back to this LP occasionally. It's not as bad as people make it out to be. A little dated, sure, but it's a fun album. I love George's Within You Without You.

Another little known fact is that the real Sgt. Pepper was the lovechild of an American apothecary, well known to this day for the disgusting, sugary, carbonated potion that carried his name.

He joined the army in an attempt to assuage the guilt that he felt over his father's snake oil shenanigins, and was a model soldier, tipped for great things until his sordid secret was discovered. He never acheived a higher rank than Sgt. and when he left the army he moved to England and took up residence in Hole, near Blackburn, Lancashire where he lived out the rest of his life.
Sgt Pepper and the good doctor never spoke another word after he joined up which was just as well. Unbenown to Sgt Pepper, his father carried on with his experiments, and working for the Germans during WW2, invented Fanta Orange and Mountain Dew. He was arrested at the end of the war and tried at Nuremberg where he was found guilty of crimes against humanity.

S'true - honest.

His father was the Dr. Pepper? Well, I'll be...
