Ring me, ring me, ring me
Up the President
And find out
Where my radio show went
Ring me, ring me, ring me
Up the FBI
And find out if
My show's alive

I don't have a radio show, but I DO tune my iPod's car adapter to the local christian rock station (my car also has an AUX plug, so I don't need to tune it to an off channel to listen to it myself).

this way, when ever I pass someone who's listening to the latest in Kumbaya, they get an earfull of whatever happens to be playing on the iPod at the moment.

the last person I passed with that station's bumper sticker got a dose of Skinny Puppy. it's fun to watch them look around in anger and eventually start banging on the steering wheel!

them a' call us pirates. illlllleeeegal broadcasta's.

I'm getting a radio show again. This time I'll be on the college radio station. I'll have to be careful about my albums and CDs with the f-word, since I'll have to play strictly by the man's rules this time around.

SynthethicalY 05.15.2007 03:12 PM

I wonder how long till they forbid for stations to play Rape Me?

gmku 05.15.2007 03:27 PM

I'm serious. I'll be the oldest damned DJ they ever had, I know that much. I wonder if they realize I'm an old man. I did identify myself as a university staffer not a student. I start June 4, Mondays, 8-10 pm.

SWEET. avoid boomer classics and you'll be on safe ground.

gmku 05.15.2007 03:41 PM

Heh, yeah. I don't want to be their classic rock DJ.

I know that feeling. Our AM signal at KPSU is leased from the Portland School Districts, who are stricter than the FCC. And there's this jerk from the school station who's in charge of the contract, listening all the time with hopes of busting us and suspending us or shutting us down for good. Probably 2/3s of what I play is instrumental anyway, but you forget about stuff like Sun City Girls tracks where they go off with tourettes syndrome sessions in the middle of a song and stuff. I've definitely had some stuff slip through that made me sweat out the rest of the week wondering if I still had a show, or for that matter a station, a few times.

What's the story on the show you lost?

How's the record store business going?

Embryonically.

I'm trying to write a business plan and figure some stuff out. Won't happen for at least several months, though. I haven't even moved to our new state/city, so it's hard to do some of this in advance 1,000 miles away. Don't even want to collect inventory (used records, CDs) because of the hassle of moving more stuff.

But I'm working on it. I'm also writing a business plan for a freelance writing business. I might do both, especially in the beginning when I'm sure things will be slow. Writing would provide an income (hopefully) that I can manage from home in free moments from working on setting up the store.

The FCC took it away. Shut down the whole station. It was a pirate station. The owner fought the FCC once before, about 5 years ago, and WON, and I think he was feeling pretty cocky, thinking they wouldn't come after him again. Well, they did. Apparently some listener called the FCC and complained about profanity, and a couple of goons showed up on this guy's doorstep and made him shut down. They also asked for the names of all the DJs (gulp) but he told them he knew us only by our DJ names, and anyway, oops, what do you know, the computer file he kept them on was accidentally deleted somehow...

The thing is, there's a lot of "profanity" in rock music. There's a lot I don't even realize or remember is there until the song is underway. How careful do you have to be?

I'd like to listen to that. Will it be broadcasted online at all?

gmku 05.16.2007 09:25 AM

Yes. All the shows on this station are streamed. I'll keep you posted when I start up.

This will be nice because the station is legit, and nicely funded (by the U), so I'll have those perks like the streaming and a large in-studio CD collection (won't have to drag my collection in necessarily), and up-to-date digital technology and so on.

against_the_grain 05.16.2007 09:34 AM

Nice that you at least get another opportunity for a show though. I'd like to get the link too and listen in !

Will you play the gamut in your playlisting ? from 20s and 30s blues to today's SY noise ? :D

Do you play randomly gmku or do you devise a somewhat cohesive 'show' each 2 hour timeslot ?

I've always wanted to DJ. Not so much for blabbing..but just to play music and info to got along with it. I fantasize about it . :)

I have to be insanely careful. It's a pain in the ass, when many of your favorite musicians traffic in being sneaky about this stuff. Aphex Twin, the Melvins, Sun City Girls, even Sonic Youth, have a way of putting little dj traps in their songs that I totally admire, but fear when I'm on the air!
