Make a convincing argument for Mastodon (please)

I wouldn't normally start a thread like this... but I'm strapped for cash and I generally trust the musical opinions of many of the individuals on this board, which is why I post here.

I heard a couple songs from Mastodon the other day in passing. And afterward I realized I liked what I heard. A friend highly recommends them, and he's been hit and miss in his musical reccomendations with me.

Would you kind folks who are familiar with the band's music tell me why I should, or should not purchase one of their albums. I promise that I will not hold it against anyone for making a bad judgment!

I know Mastodon are basically sucked off by critics, but so are The Decemberists, and I fucking hate them...

Thank you :)

I like Leviathan. It's one of those albums that wears its influences (primarily 80s NWOBHM and early Thrash) on its sleeve without simply turning into some kind of an ironic nostalgia-fest.

Mastodon are a fucking bore.

Leviathan is great, but, to me at least, it's a bit difficult to listen to the whole thing at once. there are a bunch of great songs on it that i like to listen to individually and put into mixes, but i rarely listen to the whole album. i'd still buy it first.

Blood Mountain is much easier to listen to in one sitting, but it isn't as good.
