Pavement: Westing (by Musket and Sextant)
I found this album secondhand today in my local. Was $14 Aus. I have it on hold.
I can't find much information on this album. Someone familiar (unlike me) with this album, help a brother out, please. Divulge me with information. |
Its all their EPs from before and around Slanted and Enchanted. As such its kinda ragtag as well as being - to quote someone who Thurston asked about them when they first came out - "somewhat unlistenable".
I dont really listen to it loads but it has some great stuff like Home, Box Elder, She believes, Debris Slide, Forklift. Its the one where the "Its The Fall" thing comes across most. So if youre already a fan its great, not for beginners though. |
its a Pavement CD, so therefore its fuckin brilliant.
snap it up ASAP! |
I don't like it much. Too noisy (like the guitar is an inaudible fuzz), but there are some gems, like Box Elder, Home, Debris slide etc. Home live on Slanted deluxe is waaay better imo.
|
i love it, absolutely essential record!!!!!!
more noisy and lo-fi than their later records but if you like slanted & enchanted i'm sure you'll like it too. some total gems there, like box elder, you're killing me, forklift etc. |
Hmm... Maybe it'll grow on me.
|
probably 2nd best. wowee zowee, of course, being the crowning achievement.
|
westing is amazing. westing deserves a place in everyones heart for 3 reasons...
1- box elder 2- debris slide and 3- everything else.... excellent album |
Baptist Blacktick!

MY FAVORITE! hell yeah! spizzle truck!
YR KILLING ME! YR KILLING ME AGAIN! funny that someone complains about guitars sounding too fuzzy on a sonic youth forum! sonic youth's guitars sound like explosions at a piano factory sometimes! I love!@ westing by musket and sextant collects the early singles DEMOLITION PLOT, SLAY TRACKS, (all very expensive to find) and more more. westing is fucking awesome. not a bad freakout on it. that on and slanted are my two most ultimate favorite pavement westing was recorded by just spiral stairs and S.M. mostly, with some drum work by Gary Young. westing is the rulinest shit around. |
Alright, alright. I'll pick it up today.

Worth it alone for Angel Carver Blues/Mellow Jazz Docent
|
It's a masterpiece. A fucking good sound, rough, Lofi, great songs, no bullshit... The early Pavement songs were the best, in my opinion. I love it. Perfect Sound Forever...

been listening to this again a lot lately. there's just something about it. i still think wowee is thier crowning achievement... though slanted deserves mention for being one of the only records to ever blow my mind when i first heard it 6 years ago... actually, i pretty much enjoy everything pavement's ever done. KINGS OF GOOD MELODY! PERFECT SOUND FOREVER!
this album rules. gary young's drumming is really really really awesome -- in an awful way, but somehow.. I dunno... I don't think any other kind of drumming would work for this stuff really. There's this random drum roll thing in "Forklift" that always makes me laugh. I like this album because it really sounds like they didn't know what the hell they were doing or how to play their instruments properly at all but they had some good song ideas and melodies and just went for it. And it worked... |
controversial
some say it rules, others say it's way overrated. It's personaly the Pavement record i enjoy the least (mmm terror twilight wasn't that good either was it? but i still like it more. The sound puts me off, like somebody said it's a bit too lofi for me (just as the first Silver Jews Lp). Now the songs are great and you gotta have it, because Pavement (used to) rule. |
I bought the vinyl of it recently, & to be honest, it was okay. There are places on that record that are just not what you'd expect when listening to Pavement. I lean towards Wowee Zowee being my favorite Pavement record.

funny that, that sound is ezactly what i expect from pavement...... my favourite pave albums in order for the record are slanted westing crcr wowee corners terror and also put their peel sessions (both of them) together and its probably top of the list and yeah, they are also the order of release so that speaks volumes for me anyway... i love pavement but i love their period when they didnt really know how to construct a song. i thought they got better songwriters but much more tedious with their latter albums.... by the way, its a close call between everything they did up to brighten the corners.... ![]() |
