This is really interesting, ive been doing work on acoustics and sound perception recently for my degree, the Helmholtz reference this bloke makes is really nice to see. Kinda getting this connection from perception research and music itself.

I'm watching this right now.

atsonicpark 08.14.2007 02:30 AM

one artist me and porkmaraas can agree on, I guess?

Read his book, "genesis of a sound".

I've seen this BBC doc and the Captain Beefheart BBC doc.. nice that they actually cover good musicians that mainstream American doesn't care about as much.. I wonder what other good BBC documenaries there are..

There's also some documentary about Partch I saw on youtube; it was partly about Partch but mostly about these kids building their own instruments.. it was great, saw it a long time ago, can't remember the title, just type in "Harry Partch" in youtube and it should come up.. yeah.

Cool. . . I'll check it out. I've read a lot about Harry Partch, but never read any of his books or really heard anything.

atsonicpark 08.14.2007 04:23 AM

he's amazing, he basically invented his own language.

his music often sounds like traditional japanese music going out of tune with all kinds of intricate bells and glasses and other types of odd percussion dancing around the mix..

just.. i dunno.. very very intricate... whereas you'll hear a lot of classical music that features many instruments playing the same thing or playing similiar things, harry partch kinda had tons of people playing completely different things, each instrument venturing off in its own direction, but somehow being held together by some bizarre sequence of microtonal notes.

truely like nothing i've heard before or will probably hear again.

the reason i said syzygys earlier in this thread is because they're a female duo pop group who also make video game music who use harry partch's microtonal organ to make pop music. so, it sounds like.. uh.. traditional japanese pop music.. going out of tune. great!

Oh Man, not only am I ashamed that I have no Borbetomagus in my music collection, I also.....no.....I cannot say it.

(But thanks for this thread.)

The Earl Of Slander 11.19.2009 12:35 AM

Man, need to watch this when I don't have a crushing essay deadline. Partch is amazing! The Letter!

Skuj 11.19.2009 12:49 AM

Going thru the documentary - having a big Partch familiarization eve - this is great. He reminds me of Cage in many ways. (He came before Cage!)

HARRY PARTCH COLLECTION VOL. 2 and DELUSIONS OF THE FURY are two of the greatest albums ever released.

Skuj 11.20.2009 11:44 PM

I wonder if Don Van Vliet ever publicly acknowledged a debt to Partch? I hear many Troutmaskreplica-esque bits in part 3 of this doc.
