Sonic Youth do Dylan June 12, 2007 Sonic Youth have recorded a new song to an upcoming Todd Haynes directed movie. The film, titled "I'm Not There", is about the life of Bob Dylan and follows seven characters, each embodying a different aspect of Dylan's life story and music. The soundtrack also features contributions from Stephen Malkmus (produced by Lee Ranaldo), The Hold Steady, Calexico and others. ![]() |

SONIC YOUTH RECORDS DYLAN SONG FOR TODD HAYNES FILM
Sonic Youth has recently redorded a version of the rarely-head Bob Dylan song 'I'm not There' for the Todd Haynes movie of the same name. Recording was done at the band's own studio with John Agnello and Aaron Mullan. Lee has also recorded a group of Dylan songs for the film with a group consisting of Tom Verlaine (gtr.), John Medeski (organ/keyboards), Tony Garnier (bass) + Steve Shelley (drums) and guest vocalists including Verlaine, Stephen Malkmus, Karen O, Eddie Vedder and Mira Billotte. |
Playing with Tom Verlaine !? Wow wow wow !!!

I wonder when it will be released. The film will be playing from September 21st. Do they release soundtracks in the U.S. on the same time the movie is out.
If so September is going to be a great month with this and with the Thurston and Magic Markers releases. <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="<A href="http://www.youtube.com/v/UxO6m_yz8cE"></param><param">http://www.youtube.com/v/UxO6m_yz8cE"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/UxO6m_yz8cE" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object> |

Randall Poster and Jim Dunbar supervised the soundtrack, which will feature artists as diverse as Willie Nelson and Yo La Tengo playing Dylan songs, as well as songs performed by Dylan himself. |

A place dedicated to that sweet spot where music and movies meet. We Forgot Cat Power: More Musical Interpretations In The Zimmy Film ![]() Of course we just wrote about the bands who have recorded Dylan songs for the film; some of them include Yo La Tengo, Sonic Youth, Stephen Malkmus (he's a Portland buddy and neighbor of Haynes), My Morning Jacket and Calexico. Now we've learned that Yo La Tengo has recorded two songs for the film, "Fourth Time Around" (from Blonde on Blonde) and "I Wanna Be Your Lover" (from the boxset retrospective Biograph). Amusingly enough, in our aforementioned "I'm Not There" musical re-cap, we forgot to mention something we had already reported: Cat Power covering "Stuck Inside of Mobile With the Memphis Blues Again" with the Memphis Rhythm Band (the fantastic backing band she toured with in the spring of '06). Here's what we wrote back in April: The [Paper magazine] article was full of other very interesting tid-bits as well. Turns out the song [Marshall] recorded for Todd Haynes' upcoming Bob Dylan artsy-biopic, "I'm Not There," will be the song, "Stuck Inside of Mobile With the Memphis Blues Again," from Blonde on Blonde. She's "unabashedly fanatic," about Dylan and has a shrine dedicated to Zimmy on her living room bookcase ("It's tacky, let's face it," she told the magazine). And lastly, keep in mind: Just because a song has been recorded for a film doesn't neccesarily guarantee its inclusion in the film. While we've reported and collated a ton of potential songs that could be in the film, it doesn't neccesarily mean they'll actually be in the film. But here's to hoping... The Leaked Clip ![]() Some people are suggesting the guy in the car next to Dylan/Jude/Cate Blanchett is John Lennon. It's all speculation of course, but we're not really sure we buy that. If that's John Lennon, whoever that actor is played by (Adam Goldberg? It's extremely hard to tell) is doing a pretty strange interpretation (and a terrible Lennon accent). A comment posted in the Rolling Stone blog story section assumed it was the Animals' Alan Price which to us doesn't sound as dubious as Lennon, but again, it's all conjecture. Having just watched the clip again, we're going to bet it's not Lennon. |

The Music A lot has been written about the music in the film and whether the featured Dylan songs would be cover versions or original incarnations. Here's what we know so far (there reportedly will be at least some original versions) : - Movie music Tastemaker Randall Poster and Jim Dunbar did the music supervision for the film (Poster did music supervisions for "Velvet Goldmine" and all of Wes Anderson's films) - Stephen Malkmus covered "Ballad of a Thin Man" and "Maggie's Farm" with ![]() - Hoboken indie-rockers Yo La Tengo recorded a Dylan cover for the film according to Variety. - A recent color correction screening of the film revealed that one scene's dialogue is taken from the Dylan song, "She's Your Love Now," plus confirmed the song My Morning Jacket covered, "Going To Acapulco " (from the Basement Tapes). - Sonic Youth were asked by Haynes to record a version of the eponymous Basement Tapes track, "I'm Not There," and it was initially unclear whether the song would be used, but the same color screening confirmed the use of the song in the film, as well as Christian Bale role as the long-rumored evangelical Dylan who leaves the music industry to become "a ordained minister and is performing 'Pressing On'" (from the album Saved). - '60s folk legend Ritchie Havens contributed a cover. - Calexico contributed a rendition of Street Legal's "Señor (Tales of Yankee Power)", joined by folk legend Willie Nelson and flamenco guitarist Salvador Duran. The band performed and briefly discussed their cover on Minnesota Public Radiolast September. ![]() - The little-known Montreal band, the Royal Mountain Band were cast as The Band in the film (They were named the Hawks at the time). According to the Montreal Gazette members of Wolf Parade and Montreal rockers Starvin' Hungry also auditioned for the part, but the RMB won over Haynes with a stellar audition of "Ballad of A Thin Man." Rumor and Innuendo - A posting on an IMDB message board claimed Mason Jennings (son of Waylon) recorded a cover of "The Times They Are A Changing" which Christian Bale apparently sings in the film (though historically this era wouldn't jive with Bale's/Dylan's 'I've found God' era). - Micheal Stipe, PJ Harvey and Jack White were rumored to be contributing songs for the film, but White's publicist confirmed that he had no involvement in the film. |
