My aunt thinks the european labor union is a continuance of Rome and a sign of. . .

. . . the end times.

She also asked me what that means when she found out Turkey was a republic.

A continuance of Rome? Ask her what the hell that means. Is your auntie a religious fanatic, by any chance?

Make her go listen to some Godspeed you black emperor.

well, europe has been subjected to total domination before, hasn't it? by the romans, napoleon, the nazis (practically); so the fact that the whole continent is being united again under one law and currency doesn't seem that crazy.

gmku 07.07.2007 10:54 AM

Would a united Europe necessarily be a bad thing, though? That's what puzzles me about your aunt's thinking. How does she make that jump? What is she afraid of exactly?

Reality TV is actually a more conrete sign of returing to Roman times. Now if they would just cut to the chase, own up to the power of the Lowest Common Denominator, and get to the logical conclusion of that trajectory already.

By which I mean, naturally, bringing back the Circus Maximus. Televised of course; no one wants to get off their sofa and actually go down and see some prostitutes getting raped by baboons on a life-sized replica of a merchant vessel afloat in a stadium filled with water in the flesh.

Well, maybe some would, but they would be "face-painter" types and no one wants to hang out with them anyway.

tell yr aunt she is looking in the wrong place, American christians have been convinced by their clergy to look to Europe as the stage for the book of Revelations, but as it has been pointed out before, Europe has a longstanding history of temporary unification, pretty much three times a century since the "official" fall Rome......

the reality is that Revelations occurs in another place, and the use of Rome is simply metaphorical, symbolic, and according to Paul the precise definition of the word "typical" (meaning a type of or example).
