What's a good book for a girl in the 8th grade?

Just wanted to hear from some of the female gender on what books you came across when you were 12-13 that had a postive effect on you...made you think.... thank you.

Hmmm a bunch of suggestions from dudes in their 30's. Thanks but could anybody else give it a shot?

davenotdead 09.04.2007 10:49 AM

im not yet 30, but ive got nothing for you.

my guess is that seeing as it's a tuesday, and school is in session, it's going to be hard to find the 12-13 year old girls who post here on right now. they are like, uh, in school, and stuff.

no worries though, Glice should be back soon.

This request isn't for any specific age group to respond. I'm just looking to give my sister a book and was curious what if any books people read when they were that age that they look back on as being a good read.

Daddylikes 09.04.2007 12:33 PM

I'm not a woman...but...when I was 13-14 I read a lot of sci-fi/poli sci type books.

1984, Farenheit 451 (the fact that both of these stories are LOVE stories escape many), Brave New World, A Clockwork Orange, The Andromeda Strain, Jurrassic Park, etc, were all great reads when I was that age.

As far as gender specifics are concerned? Eh. Blah. Genderism is so 30 years ago.

Maybe Mother Night by K.Vonnegut

I didn't start reading in a rabid fashion until I was 14 and I somehow feel that those books would be too much of a mind spasm for someone I feel is very young.
I mean yeah... it's not like I'm passing off the Anarchists Cookbook....ok thanks SYGossip

Naked Lunch?

h8kurdt 09.04.2007 02:46 PM

Bloody hell. Here's some decent choices

The Colour Purple
and
Oranges aren't the only fruit

Both decent novels and don't patronise the reader.

Roald Dahl- Boy

I know it is an autobiography about Roald Dahl's being a young boy, but for males and females at age 13 it is a very good read.

jeezus, with this thread

get her some basic poetry, nothing about fucking-- khalil gibran or something.

as for novels-- im not well-versed in girly literature, i dont know-- don't people read "little women" anymore? i always liked the tomboy one, i forget her name-- jo? yeah.

when i was 12 i used to read a lot of adventure novels-- verne, salgari, all that shit.

girls are supposedly more into social life & relationships, or so the zoologists say.
