pre-daydream albums remasters?

Does anyone know if there are any plans to release the albums before daydream nation with extra tracks/rarities/b-sides? I would love to own that stuff, as I have (as have many idiots like me in the late 1980s/early 1990s) sold their vinyls and bought the cds (naively thinking all will be released on that format). I thought only Geffen stuff will come out, but with their 1st album now remastered I'm beginning to hope again. So any info anyone?

If any of the band members reads this: Sister, Kill Yr. Idols, EVOL, Bad Moon... Please Please Please...

I'd rather they record something new than keep riding the gravy train into moneyville but a deluxe release of Confusion Is Sex/Kill Yr Idols would be nice.

I would love to hear Bad Moon Rising, EVOL and Sister remastered. I think the material on these albums are Sonic Youth's best (outside DDN) but also very poorly recorded.

I would love to hear other stuf remasterd too but Sister can't happen now as they famously bloody taped over the aster for their Experimantal... album. Bloody idiots they are.

sonicl 09.10.2007 11:56 AM

I'd rather hear some unreleased stuff than remasters of stuff I already have. It's high time that a few more SYRs got released.

pbradley 09.10.2007 11:58 AM

Never dug Sister all that much. Half of it is amazing, the other half is dead weight. But yeah, master is bye bye.

I think all songs on Sister are exellent, but the recording (especielly the drums) really doesn't do it for me. However, I think Evol is perfect. No need to mess with that according to me.

confusion is sex definately needs remastering

atsonicpark 09.12.2007 02:19 PM

Hahah, man, sister is by far and away their best album, though it's not my favorite (confusion is). EVERYTHING is just THERE on that album. Anywho, I HIGHLY doubt any of those albums will ever be remastered, not that they really need to be except to give us a big thick book with essays from Stephen Malkmus or something ("I dug that one guitar effect so I used that guitar effect and now my guitar is effected blah blah blah"). COOL!!!!!!1

yeah, the "gravy train into moneyville"

grow up

you think that they really are making big bucks off of these re-issues? They are each probably selling less than one tenth of what the original album sold.

remastering sucks

leave the albums BE

i think everything between CIS and Washing Machine needs a remaster, so many of those 90's reissue transfers suffer from really suffer from being rather quiet, especially if you listen to more modern remasters of older albums to first cd issues

like with the Beatles discs that were released in 87, it's really poor quality compared to what modern reissues sound like, i remember reading George Martin separated the original tracks to 5.1 Surround for the Love Circ de Soleil thing, but they have dragged their heels on reissuing the original albums

but yeah the ones that really need the remaster the most are Jet Set, Sister, and EVOL

atsonicpark 09.12.2007 02:32 PM

eh? jet set is probably their best-sounding album.

pantophobia 09.12.2007 02:35 PM

i find it a little quiet, but maybe it's my copy, all the other ones seem a little louder when at the same volume level on my stereo

atsonicpark 09.12.2007 02:37 PM

odd.

you know, with sonic youth, i've never really had a problem with any of the albums sounding too quiet.. actually, yeah, sister probably sounds the quietest, but the rest sound volumized a-okay.

on the volume note, i've noticed a lot of albini-recorded bands and albini's own projects usually sound relatively quiet (big black in particular -- they need to remaster all those early big black records and put out all those long-out-of-print rarities).

Markrutconn 09.12.2007 02:41 PM

In Utero is pretty damn loud.

*doffs cap*

I dont want any remasters, i havent bought DDN or Goo remasters and i wouldnt get any of the others.

It's interesting that alot of people in this thread are saying that the 80's albums on cd are too quiet. That they need to be remastered and have the volume boosted.

Nothing could be furthur from the truth. Haven't you guys heard of clipping and 'hot' mastering? It's completely ruining the state of cd's these days. Because everything gets volume boosted, the wav file has its dynamics chopped off and we're not hearing the full recording.

There's a thing on your stereo, it's called 'the volume knob'. By using the volume knob, WE get to decide how loud the music is. Not the record company trying to blast the opposition away for the sake of radio.

loudness war

Protectmeyou 09.14.2007 10:57 PM

this is a screen capture of a song ripped from cd, that's mastered too loudly and features the dynamic range compressed and chopped off:

this is the same song, a vinyl rip (done by myself) which was converted to mp3. no clipping or loss of dynamic range.
sure it may be quieter, but the wav file is completely intact:

the first thing I did when I bought the deluxe version of Daydream was to rip one of the songs and see whether it had been mastered too loud. of course it had. :(
Louder is not better.
