A question to mac users on the forum today.

I'm experiencing something on my macs at work and at home.
My machines automatically start downloading ghost files with an .aspx extention. What the hell is going on? Habib?

Active Server Page Extended

those are activeX files (microsoft) used by web pages using ASP.NET formats.

are you connected to a website when this happens?

Tokolosh 09.26.2007 01:18 PM

Sometimes. What's weird about it is that the files are all 0kb. Strange.

is your OS or Safari set to auto-update?

it's possible that it's getting files that it needs to connect to ASP.NET sites from microsoft.

turn off auto-update if it's on and see if it still happens (I don't use a Mac [bleh], but I assume that it has this function).

most likely, the files are benign (and under 1kb in size).

is your firewall active and up to date?

next time, write down the whole file name (if you can) and google it. that will usually tell you what / why / where.

Tokolosh 09.26.2007 01:35 PM

No. It's not on auto update and I've never had to use a firewall. Well, we have a firewall at work, because we have pcs to protect. This only happens when I'm posting on here. It's not constant though. My last post was ok.

floatingslowly 09.26.2007 01:45 PM

hmm, well, that is weird then. :p

have an iBook at home and I don't think that it ever has that problem (here or anywhere else).

next suggestion: toss out yr Mac and buy a PC. :D

Rub it in will ya! :D

I've had to log in 4 times since my last post. Maybe it's a sign to go make supper. Thanks anyway.

yeah, that's happened to me before. every time i opened a new window on this board to read the next page of posts etc it downloaded something.

Best thing to do is to quit safari, then reopen it, that fixed it for me. If not try shutting down everything you are running and restarting the computer.

never happened to me, but let me know what you do to get rid of it, just in case it does.
