Have you guys ever heard of this? Pretty damn cool

have you guys ever heard of this...
"Basically this DJ fella was out looking for records one day and came across some funky soul records from someone he's never heard of, but after closer inspection he realized that the records were fakes- they were made from cardboard and the grooves in the records were done by hand. These "records" were individual creations and couldn't be played on a record player. It was more about the fascination of being a soul superstar that Mingering Mike made his own records- over 100 albums with extensive liner notes, gatefold interiors, and some with shrinkwrap, as if purchased at real record shops."
here is a link to pics of the book about these "records"

That is...weird. From the first few lines I thought this was gonna be about the 'lost' Velvet Underground vinyl, which some guy bought in New York for $0.75, and sold for $$$$.

Rob Instigator 09.27.2007 08:50 AM

whoe ver this gu is made hundreds of records, by hand, unplayable all, but crazy weird and oddly beautiful. I would like to get the book

Savage Clone 09.27.2007 08:52 AM

High concept.

val-holla-ing 09.27.2007 08:56 AM

that's nutty!

Rob Instigator 09.27.2007 09:48 AM

as nutty as this?

Toilet & Bowels 09.27.2007 10:31 AM

i want that book too

gmku 09.27.2007 11:44 AM

It's one of those things that sounds like a cool (read: ironic) art project if a college art student --or even working artist--were doing this. But in the hands of the average Joe (or Mike), it comes off as rather sad (read: weird and a little sick). Feels a little icky.

Rob Instigator 09.27.2007 11:44 AM

it took YEARS!

gmku 09.27.2007 11:46 AM

Yeah. That kind of obsessiveness bothers me a little. It's a little self-absorbed.

Silent Dan Speaks 09.27.2007 12:07 PM

This is really cool.

Rob Instigator 09.27.2007 12:45 PM

wat? gmku, come ON! obsessiveness seems self absorbed? the whole entire point of this is that is the the ultimate in self-absorption! he created a persona for himself as a Soul singerand created hundreds if not thousands of fake records, including liner notes, covers, inserts etc!

that is ART!

Everyneurotic 09.27.2007 06:19 PM

dude wanted to make a record and dude did a record, nothing stopped him.

Toilet & Bowels 09.27.2007 06:22 PM

another website i read said he actually recorded a load of music too, and that some of it will be seeing the light of day at some point in the future

Tokolosh 09.27.2007 06:27 PM

I wonder if this guy could actually play music or sing at all? Still... quite amazing.

Edit: Oh. I see.

talk about building expectation!

and now it's mentioned, i bet those "non-records" are going to go for fortunes if someone spots and sells one.

gmku 09.27.2007 07:25 PM

Sorry. I don't mean it's not amazing. It just strikes me as a little sad.

No, not the Beatles--the Velvet Underground. But that's different. But don't ask me how.

Rob Instigator 09.28.2007 08:59 AM

Oh, it is sad gmku. very very sad. great art can be made in the midst of humbling patheticness!
