A rat in your house is a fortuitous sign in many cultures...in others it's a sign to start cleaning and repair broken windows in the basement...it's all just demographics, don't worry.

If you are talking about a rat, rather than a mouse, they are unlikely to attack humans, unless you attack them. Mice on the other hand tend to be silly creatures, so if you want to get rid of them, just move some of the furniture in your living room as that would make it harder for them to orientate.
