WTF. . .

This school in Portland Maine is giving middle school girls confidential access to birth control pills.

Now, I'm all for easy confidential access to contraceptives. . . but I've got a big beef with birth control pills- it is a drug that screws with the women's hormones and doesn't prevent STDs.

Condoms not pills!

alteredcourse 10.19.2007 02:47 AM

how does it screw with them ?

Onani Nic 10.19.2007 03:59 AM

From my limited knowledge it makes some girls gain weight, reduces acne or increases boob size.

The Usher 10.19.2007 04:42 AM

"increases boob size"

and that's a bad thing?

atsonicpark 10.19.2007 06:13 AM

"reduces acne"

My girlfriend used to have very inconsistent acne breakouts; she'd not have any zits for like 2 months and then she'd have all kinds of zits for like a week and then none for a week and then tons for a week and then none for a month, etc.

So, her dermatologist suggested she go on birth control pills at 16, because he said that she had something wrong with her hormones (perhaps an imbalance? I'm not sure) and it would help regulate her hormones/cycles. Of course, her super"Christian" mom was like, "NO NO MY DAUGHTER AINT' TAKIN BIRTH CONTROL NO WAY NOPE NO WAY."

I really wish she had, at some point, been on birth control, because while her acne cleared up (after fucking experimental chemical washes or some shit for like 6 months?!), she still ... well, it's kinda like her breakouts were. She'll act FUCKING INSANE for like a week, then completely normal and calm for a few weeks and then THE CRAZIEST MOST HATEFUL SADDEST MEANEST PERSON EVER for a week, etc.

Perhaps a bit off topic, but I guess I'm gonna go on record and say that birth control pills have definitely helped more than they've hurt people, and some people need to be on them for various reasons (though, obviously, the decline in teenage pregnancies is definitely a plus!). I see nothing wrong with this. They're not FORCING the girls to take them, and the girls would get them some other way if they wanted them. Obviously, the hormoanal "screwing-up" may effect some girls negatively, but I'm willing to bet it will help a lot of girls too.

Nothing wrong with this.

Though, yeah, obviously, if you're a girl fucking some random dude, he should probably still wear a condom to prevent STD's. STD's in middle school.. Jesus.

If you think it's wrong for women and girls to have easy access to birth control then you have problems.

atsonicpark 10.19.2007 07:05 AM

Right. Spectral, we know you're trying to be sympathetic here, but really, it's probably for the best that girls can get this stuff easier and confidentially. It'll do more good than harm...

How old is middle school?

fugazifan 10.19.2007 07:43 AM

7-8th grade i belive
or maybe 6-7th

ZEROpumpkins 10.19.2007 08:19 AM

Seems a little odd. Such are the times, however.

What age is that? I'm afraid the grade system is beyond my understanding. :o

ThePits 10.19.2007 10:07 AM

Anything that prevents unwanted pregnancies can't be a bad thing

11-13,
Portland Maine is half an hour from my house.

Rob Instigator 10.19.2007 10:48 AM

this was due to a rash of pregnancies in that middle school

that is way too young to be on the pill. developmentally ity is fucked up. they are still going through puberty full blast ad hormones in the pill wuill screw with them major.

Sheriff Rhys Chatham 10.19.2007 10:49 AM

Forgot to say, I'm against it.

sonicl 10.19.2007 10:50 AM

So rather than give sex education, the schools just give out the means to avoid pregnancy.

Society is so fucked up.

SynthethicalY 10.19.2007 10:51 AM

sonicl that is AMERICA. They oppose it because it will loosen their morals.

Sheriff Rhys Chatham 10.19.2007 10:52 AM

They were talking about giving the kids The morning after pill as well.

SynthethicalY 10.19.2007 10:54 AM

Well, they should make them take a class about sex ed. This will help them how to protect themselves. I really can't understand why people oppose it.

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 10.19.2007 11:19 AM

They should be teaching kids at 12 how to put on condoms and be distributing them confidentially.

I'm not against easy access to contraceptives for kids. . . just against sucking pharmaceutical companies cocks and perpetuating the overmedication of the USA.

You know the pill is also prescribed to non sexually active people to "regulate their hormones" or decrease the regularity of their periods.

There is a lot to be said for being natural.

And kids are fucking dumb. Most teenagers think if a girl is on birth control you don't need a condom, because none of them are worried about STDs, because they assume that their partners don't have them.

I see the problem 2 years from now: "Portland Maine high school has an outbreak of HPV"
