damn son! i'm on probation right now for a non-violent offense (they got me w/ dime of the sweetest cheeba), all i got was one year probation (i had a terrific lawyer). so i was going in the office one day to check in, and was finishing my smoke, and there was this really old black guy w/ one eye sitting there. so we strike up a conversation and i asked him how long his pro was for. he told me 10years! i'm like "jesus, what'd you do fucking kill a family or something?". he laughed, and proceded to tell me he got pulled over for DUI 6 times in 2 months. and he was only on his first year of pro when i saw him. that fucking sucks.
so anyways, what'd yr friend do?

10 years for 6 DUIs in 2 months is a light offense! The guy is going to kill somebody if he doesn't get his shit together.

A year probation for holding a gram on the other hand is pretty over the top where I come from. Your lawyer got paid for getting you more than you should have (but then maybe you live in a red state or something - they call them red for a reason!)

lol, yeah i live in texas. he did get me off light though. the only thing i got was a year probation and had to take some week long drug class. no community service or fine (had to pay court costs though). the reason i know is there were people in that class w/ me that got caught w/ the same or less and they had it alot worse than me. poor bastards.

Yep, Texas would be red and half! Seriously, I got caught with some amazing weed in Seattle once, and the cops were just drooling over the prospects of seizing it. They basically told me they could write a citation if I wanted it to be around to be entered as evidence. Bastards.

An 18 year sentence would usually mean something like manslaughter. Possibly murder, but more than likely not--too light for that, unless there were circumstances.

Other possibility is serious theft or burglary.
