Plan 9 From Outer Space is incredibly relevant to the US and middle east

If you remember, the aliens use 3 zombies to attack the world before the US develops the Solanite bomb.

This movie's really fucking good. Ed Wood is probably one of the only people I would consider an "idol" (along with eYe) to me. He's just amazing. I think he had this unbelievably amazing vision, and I say this with no sarcasm at all. And I'm not saying he parallels my life; I aspire to be him, though, because of how forward-thinking he was. He just went with what made him happy, and he made some truely great cinema. I think people often look at his films as "so bad, they're good" but as someone who has viewed 100000000000 worse films than any of his films, I honestly think the "incompetence" is exagerrated: he truely has some standard, mediocre directorial techniques going on. Not much in the way of style.. but tons in the way of substance. It's not like all of his shots were out of focus or anything. He knew what he was doing. I don't think the "badness" was completely unintentional; he knew he was doing something ridiculous. Watch ORGY OF THE DEAD if you don't believe me.

Ed Wood rules.

I know this has nothing to do with your thread, but ..

I respect him a lot in that he was very determined to do what he wanted to do and found ways to do so. There are many in his position who will spend their lives brown nosing producers and never making a single movie. I know a guy like that.

Uwe Boll is not Ed Wood.

Ed Wood stole a prop octopus from a movie studio because his budget couldn't afford it.

Ed Wood was a kindhearted guy and gave Bela Legosi friendship and maybe a bit of happiness.

Ed Wood got a church to produce Plan 9 From Outer Space.

ALIEN ANAL 01.08.2008 10:33 PM

whats your point?
i never said uwe was ed
im just saying that both made films that in their time were considered terrible

ZEROpumpkins 01.08.2008 11:33 PM

I love watching clips of that movie on youtube.

Uwe Bolle and Ed Wood are two completely different entities that have nothing in common except, as you said, there are a lot of detractors towards their films. Uwe's can't be enjoyed on any level, as the few I've seen (House of the Dead and Alone in the Dark) aren't funny, scary, gory, artful, or entertaining in any way. But he is simply a robot, manufacturing films to fit the genre stereotypes afforded to him by major studios with B-class (maybe C-class; Tara Reid?) stars to boot. Ed put a lot of heart and effort into his works, and if you just ignore any association with him and sit down and watch his films, they're really fucking good! Straight-up hilarious (and, again, at least most of this had to be intentional) and full of good ideas. Plan 9 is not my favorite film by him, in fact I think it IS one of his worst (though it's still really good, especially compared to any of the Hollywood bullshit films coming out today).. my favorite is DEFINITELY Glen or Glenda, which is fucking brilliant. Ed Wood, to me, was like a John Waters for his time. He had a grin on his face when doing those movies -- who wouldn't? It was his dream. And even his porn flicks are pretty cool. He also wrote some novels, only one of which I've been able to read. Good stuff. Real classy. And it'll hold up years from now. Uwe Bolle's films would've looked dated 10 years before they came out. He will be forgotten. Anyway, my point was that Ed did everything pretty much on his own. Very "DIY". And he had a flare for production and marketing. His films can't all be only celebrated for their ineptitude considering that all the shots look good and are in focus. I think the biggest thing to me, though, is that his films all seem to have heart. Which is odd. But watch one of his films and then watch something completely heartless and greed-consumed like The Matrix Revolutions and you tell me which one is better. Very odd.

And while I totally respect Ed Wood's films and his artistic vision, I will have to say that I don't totally enjoy the fact that he was racist, an alcohol, and a wifebeater. I wonder why that stuff wasn't in Tim Burton's film.......
