kranky records appreciation thread
Kranky is just great.
I'd suggest everyone check out Autistic Daughters on their label... amazing. Probably the best band on there... don't even know how to describe them, really. I guess ... if you like Xiu Xiu but wish it were more.. uh.. Kranky?.. .yeah. Sure... check them out... along with classic artists like Stars of the Lid (and related bands like Aix Em Klemm, Brian McBride's solo record), that really great Deerhunter EP, Growing, Keith Fullerton Whitman, Dead Texan, Jessamine, Godspeed, etc. |
Kranky rules. My two best December discoveries were signed on Kranky (Deerhunter + To Kil A Petty Bourgeoisie), there is plenty of great bands and discs on this label, Godspeed, Out Hud, Stars Of The Lid, etc, etc, etc

some good stuff on this label undoubtfully.
labradford, pan american... |
Yes! Excellent... One of my favorite record labels, besides Tzadik and Skin Graft...
|
yeah theyve always been excellent. and 2007 was a banner year for them. my fave artists on that label tho are godspeed (please come back), whitman (everlasting brilliance), dean roberts, bowery electric, flies inside the sun, and for the newer ones would be growing, stars of the lid (which i listened to on your reccomendation in one of these threads so thanks for that), and deerhunter (one of two new bands of 07 who deserved the jacking off that pitchfork gave them last year, the other being no age). yes, so kranky is definitley one of the best labels of now, the other great current ones being load, ecstatic peace, relapse, hydra head, warp (always great), and touch and go (legendary). but yes, go kranky!
|
yeah, dig it.
|
I didn't realise Kranky was still a going concern. I used to like that label back when Mogwai hadn't released a proper album and post-rock meant Fridge rather than Godspeed and Sigor Ros. It's probably all changed back now, what with all the changing of what's cool you young folk do.

Wow, thanks for the brainwashed link. That year-end reader poll comforts me. Stars of the Lid as album of the year and Hella's AWFUL "There's No 666 In Outer Space" as one of the worst albums of the year? Wow, you mean there was actual LOGIC used in the voting?! And then I go to the front page, and good artists like Fire on Fire (ex-Cerberus Shoal) and Oren Ambarchi are mentioned. Jesus. This site's great, thanks!

great label.
|
Hell yeah.
|
I've always had love for Kranky and they had put out many of records that were very important for me in shaping my music tastes back in the days (to mention, GYBE's "F#A# Infinity", Labradford's "Mi Media Naranja" and Bowery Electric's "Beat" at least). It's great they don't hibernate or haven't ceased to exist, but still keep vivid.

Boring new-age label.
|
One of my favourite labels. The new White Rainbow album is amzing.

kranky > ecstatic peace!

absolutely. |
Yep, Kranky are a better label than Ecstatic Peace. The twat is right, I am a little taken aback by the sudden Kranky lovefest. Of their rooster, I've always particularly loved Pan American, Philosopher's Stone, Labradford, Windy & Carl and Jessamine, amongst others.
|
I don't remember if anybody mentioned the old Low stuff they released, but I think it's worth noting.
I've met a few of the Kranky folks. Joel Kranky is nice enough, and Windy and Carl's record shop in Dearborn, Michigan is a slick place (I found an SY bootleg 7" there), and toured with Cristal, Bobby Donne of Labradford's new band, in addition to playing with their new darlings, TKAPB. Solid label, solid records. |
for the record, I think ecstatic peace is a pretty shitty record label.
i don't think it always has been, but... lately.. i dunno.. |
