Egon Shiele. solved! yay. can you identify this artwork and artist?
 

because I can think of most everything about the artist except his name and the name of this work (if there was one, since this particular one was just a figure sketch.)

I keep thinking it COULD be Lucian Freud... but google only comes up with a lot of paintings, no figurative work.. which is all that is in my head when I think about this artist .. I cant remember. Plus I dont think the more famous freud had syphilis?

The artists work and the way that his style comes through, can be quite grotesque but quite beautiful also. I believe his father had syphilis and this had an effect on his work? (unless Im getting two artists mixed up)
He painted but overall to me his plain sketches with striking backings and simple colour, are far more effective.. so they stand out to me a lot more.


uh, dismiss my bad photoshop representation but, this is one of the works that would be more stound-out-ish if you happened to be familiar with his work, or own a book on his work. Its one that stood out to me when I was reading up on him in a book of his paintings/sketches etc.

Im not even 100% sure of the pose, just of the plain black figure drawings, this one with bright red fabric draped/blocked in as a background.. quite a few other drawings of the one model, even one painting of this model also.. but no where near as visually interesting..

but there are so many more that make use of beautiful simple colour. Im so happy now looking at his work again.

His really highly worked oil paintings don't appeal to me as much, they seem to lose some of their story telling? I much prefer his quick ones.. I think mostly because of the colour? To me his lines are so much more apparent in the high contrast/less worked images, and that is his strong point.

But in any case, his line work is phenominal. Ridiculously calculated, and just in every place the right mark.

On a side note, I've known people to confuse Schiele with Klimt.

That happens sometimes.
Schiele's work appeals to me more though; it's a bit more visceral and not quite as glossy/stylized. Plus he's got that whole go-mental-die-young cache thing going on.

schiele was funky. he liked bush




schiele painted drawing from the grotesqueries of the mdoern post-war world

klimt was more of a romantic, seeking the ideal.

for what it's worth, klimt didn't dislike bushes either

Klimt took schiele as an apprentice I believe.

He was indeed a mentor to Schiele.

Next month Christies are auctioning off 8 of his pieces. It's conveniently at the beginning of the month, so having already spent all your money is hardly an excuse.

He didn't have much of a choice like we do today. :D
