UFOs

Since there have been a lot of space-related threads here in the last few hours, I thought I'd bring up everyone's favorite topic: UFOs.

The following video from a NASA shuttle is pretty wild:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aoeZ4ceAZes

can anyone identify that?

pbradley 02.23.2008 06:01 PM

A white dot.

What? You expecting something else from me?

nature scene 02.23.2008 06:02 PM

nah, i'm just wondering what kind of 'space debris' can change direction in space

pbradley 02.23.2008 06:06 PM

looks like it is orbiting something rather than changging direction though I can't imagine what

!@#$%! 02.23.2008 06:06 PM

i dont see it as a change in trajectory but as an elliptical trajectory which is as we know how mostly everything moves in space?

pbradley 02.23.2008 06:08 PM

but that's a pretty same trajectory, though...

nature scene 02.23.2008 06:10 PM

hmm, i dunno that would be a pretty tight orbit, no?

yeah i guess. but i dont know the scale or location of the things.

don't some comets have some superlong orbits?

but i really don't know but i really don't know but i really don't know

nature scene 02.23.2008 06:14 PM

so it remains unidentified

pbradley 02.23.2008 06:21 PM

What? I called it. White dot.

Prove me wrong.

floatingslowly 02.23.2008 07:34 PM

ice particles from external fuel tank break-up imo.

no self respecting alien would be caught dead in a white dot.

avantgarde1 02.23.2008 07:42 PM

i've always wanted to see a UFO. :(

floatingslowly 02.23.2008 08:06 PM

you should watch the history channel then.

personally, I'm so sick of UFOs I could scream.

If you've ever seen something flying, and you and those around you didn't know what it was, then you have.

Exactly. Most people don't want to see an unidentified object. They want to see something that they can at least presumably identify as an alien craft.

So if you say you saw something you can't identify, the "skeptics" rush in to "debunk" when you aren't necessarily making any claim to having seen anything extra-terrestrial at all.

Really, saying a blurry object looks like an airplane or whatever can be just as presuptious as saying it's a spaceship (though of course there are a lot more of the former). It all just rorschach tests most of the time. All saying it's a ufo really means is that you can't really tell what it is. To claim that's impossible is just inane.

OMG! i think you've got teh ufo infestation!
