Should my art be the cover of SYR 7? Your opinions please...

Hey guys, I did this before I'd bought any SYR releases, it's only when I started buying them that i realised it'd might make a cool SYR cover. I guess they've probably got a cover by now, but y'know, thought I'd see what people thought of it.

That's kind of cool...

fluxequalsrad 03.07.2008 03:54 PM

I like it :D maybe in green...what color are they on?

Rob Instigator 03.07.2008 04:48 PM

hell yeah that would be fucking awesome. especially on a vinyl gatefold

Ah yes, one of life's synchronicities. Personally, they used to amuse me and make me feel less isolated, and more confident about how I was faring in the stages on life's way. Now they just tend to piss me off.

But, digressions aside, you had heard of Bridget Riley or Op Art before, no?

HaydenAsche 03.07.2008 04:55 PM

Bridget Riley is fantastic. Some of the whole op art shit is boring, though.

Yes I really love Riley and Op Art, and this piece was very much inspired by her good self and also artists like Vasarely. I wanted try and do more than what Riley was able too in the 60s with limited technology, to paraphrase Thurston, " I Killed Bridget Riley With My Big Fucking Dick".

atari 2600 03.07.2008 05:04 PM

Thanks for the reply, This Is Not Here. I was just curious to find out how deep the coincidence went. (umm...I love John & Yoko as well (another aside))

Ah...Bridget Riley...paintings to give yourself a headache to...or epileptic seizure...my jury is still out. I see it more as artistic craft than fine art, the truth be revealed. At any rate, at least Op Art beats the hell out of that computer-generated holographic "art."

For the SYR series though, I like how they've gone with the whole distinctive design and op art theme...looks cool.

In music, Harsh Noise sorta finds it's visual counterpart in Op Art if you think about it. And although the SYR series is not "harsh" noise, it's still has it's differences from the largely songwriting-based Sonic Youth recordings. Perhaps all this has something to do with the design choices of the SYR series. (And, of course, also around the time they first appeared, there was a large amount of interest in marketing cds with less packaging).

Well man, don't knock it, my peice is entirely computer based. I do see Op Art as fine art, people often forget that Bidget Riley was a painter just like any other artist, the technical and mathematical skill involved in her peice will surely surpass any figurative painting. Some more of my thang http://www.sonicyouth.com/gossip/showthread.php?t=71

chimologic 03.07.2008 05:32 PM

all the SYR abstract cover images come from the same book.

atari 2600 03.07.2008 05:32 PM

I just meant that I can't stand those hologram thingies and people who think that stuff is art. As for making art on the computer, I'm all for it in a lot of cases, but moreso for the practical ability to spontaneously generate and edit images. I think it can be useful at times to use the computer as sort of a drawing board where one works out ideas for paintings.

Nice pic This Is Not Here! For strange reasons, I think it would fit perfectly a Double Leopards record, don't ask me why.

Seek for Halve Maen, that's a masterpiece ;)

chabib 03.11.2008 06:58 PM

we're not really doing moires anymore. they'll make appearances from time to time as elements worked into images, but the series isn't exclusively moire based.
