Is Early Sonic Youth Satanic?
 

I'm not necessarily decided on this, but its something I've been wondering about for some time. There are a few tracks of pre-DDN Sonic Youth which have always struck me to be quite 'satanic', namely "Satan is Boring":

"SATAN FLIRTS - IM PREPARED
ITS NOTHING TO CONQUER - THE FIGHT IS GOOD
YOUR FLESH HAS A LIMIT OF TOO MANY YEARS
ITS A SHOCK ABSORBER OF YOUR STINGING TEARS"

and, particularly Protect Me You:

"PROTECT ME DEMONS
THAT COME AT NIGHT
I DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY SAY
THEIR WHISPERING
SENDS THE NIGHT AIR AWAY
AND MAKES ME FORGET
I HOPE THEY COME
AGAIN AND AGAIN"

What do you guys think? I do think theres probably a better case for labelling early SY as just 'nihilistic' (Death Too Our Friends, Society is a Hole, Confusion is Next). A Black Metal connisuer freind has always told me what satanism and nihilism are as good as the same thing, so maybe that explains some of this content, I dunno...

Satanism != Nihilism

I don't think Sonic Youth were nearly wacked out enough to be satanists. I think it is a bit tongue and cheek.

I think early sonic youth is their world view.

I never sensed "satanism", though that wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing -- lots of intelligent people are satanists. I sense more of an agnostic mindset paired with, as you guys said, nihilism.

Satan Is Boring is about a satanic murder that really happened if I remember well, but it does not mean they're satanic at all...

But they say right there in the song title "Satan is boring"!

I would never imagine SY to be in league with such mouth breathing provocateurs. They're smarter than that. Perhaps nihilistic, but what good art punk isn't?

Anyway, satanists are often either EXTREMELY intelligent or extremely retarded. No middle ground.

And I hope that everyone who posts to this thread knows satanists don't, y'know, worship Satan.. you guys all know that I'm sure, but just in case someone else was going to reply with.. "SONIC YOUTH DON'T WORSHIP THE DEVIL!"
