The proms 2008

Destined to sink like shit in a swimming pool - a thread about the BBC proms season for 2008! Proper link this time!

Rob Instigator 04.09.2008 12:21 PM

what is a prom?

Glice 04.09.2008 12:30 PM

Concerts of note for me:

[Insert re-assessment presently]

I will be avoiding the last night like AIDS.

Another fairly conservative line-up, but should be pretty good - there's no way I'll make it to all the things I want to, but I will definitely make every effort for a fair few of the weekend ones. Good times, oh yes.

It's a season of classical music put on on the South Bank in London - it'll be broadcast in its entireity on Radio 3 so if you can't make it, you can at least listen (they do most of them on listen again). Always well worth making it along.

Rob Instigator 04.09.2008 01:16 PM

fucking beautiful!

I woudl hit any Bartok and Mahler they got!

Berlioz is dope too!

Glice 04.09.2008 01:22 PM

They're doing Mahler's first as well, but I'm really not a big fan of that.

EDIT: I am a spack and this is probably wrong. I fucking listened to all the Mahler last year, why did I not notice this yesterday?

Rob Instigator 04.09.2008 01:28 PM

fuck the first one.
I love the Middle and late Mahler stuff, where it gets so incredibly dense and amazing.

How much are these concerts? These sound like a lot of fun.
In Houston, in the summer we have an outdoor theatre and they have classical music for 4 weekends in a row, and the they have the Houston Shakespeare Festival.

Glice 04.09.2008 01:50 PM

They're usually about £10 ($20?) or so for a ticket, but you can get £rape priced ones as well. I think a season pass makes it oodles cheaper, but you'll pay out of the arse for it. The good thing is, because the venues are proper ones, you don't lose much in sound quality sitting in crappy seats.

Edit: this is still true though.

Rob Instigator 04.09.2008 01:51 PM

fucking awesome. enjoy!!!!

Toilet & Bowels 04.09.2008 05:41 PM

That's some keen eyes you got there - the link, I swear, said 2008, but it transpires I looked through 2007. What a prick I truly am.

Sadly, in spite of some fairly heavy-league prickery, I'm not quite enough of a world-class cuntrag to do that.

what during land of hope and glory?

Glice 04.10.2008 12:36 PM

That would be amazing. So long as you could project some sort of message on the back wall so you could watch all the pink-faced, flag-waving pricks' faces drop, ashen like, before watching the long-overdue divine justice wreck its full effects.

Glice 04.15.2008 01:35 PM

18/7 - Strauss/ Mozart/ Messiaen/ Beethoven/ Carte
21/7 - Messiaen (ascension!)/ Saint-Saens
27/7 - Messiaen (transfiguration...!)
2/8 - Stockhausen
17/8 - Beethoven (Mass in C!!)
19/8 - Messiaen/ Varese
22/8 - Mahler (5!)/ Stockhausen/ Schubert/ Beethoven
24/8 - Bach day (no way I'm missing this).
2/9 - Wagner (Tristan prelude!)/ Messiaen (Turangalila!)
4/9 - Messiaen (Quartet for the end of time!!!)
7/9 - Messiaen (St Francis of Assisi - 6 hour concert, apparently).
10/9 - Williams (blurgh)/ Xenakis (yay!)/ Holst (the planets - fuck off, it's great)
12/9 - Wager/ Penderecki (threnody!)/ Beethoven (9th...)

13/9 - a load of pricks waving flags like cunts.

Hmm. Not actually that much amazingness this year. But not too much Elgar, so it's swings and roundabouts.

jon boy 04.15.2008 01:42 PM

i would be quite interested in the stockhausen.

LIES!

I found a picture of you waving the Union Jack during Land of Hope and Glory at last year's edition.

Glice 09.08.2008 03:07 PM

Right, so I've done horrifically badly at attending these proms, but I have listened to all the ones I wanted to. And last night I went to see the Messiaen, which was unspeakably amazing in a way I couldn't possibly explain. It's on listen again for a week, if you've got 5 hours or so going spare.

And, craply, I can't make it to the Beethoven next Friday, so someone else should, because it'll be awesomest.

Seriously though, that Messiaen shit will fuck you well up.
