Recommend me some Zappa
I've really enjoyed his songs in passing listen and now I'm ready to get full albums.
|
Freak Out and Hot Rats are the two I still love long after my Zappa phase is over. The humor element got to be grating after a while.
Weasels Ripped My Flesh is pretty great too. |
Thanks. I'll check those out.
|
I like Hot Rats too, but overall I think the Mother's of Invention stuff is the way to go. We're Only In It for the Money, Freak Out!, Uncle Meat, and Absolutely Free being my faves. Lumpy Gravy, his first solo album in 1967 is also great.
I tend to favor the more experimental and cut up stuff. I used to listen to him a lot more, but also got tired of the comedy over time. Sometimes it still really hits the spot though. |
Eh.
Weasels Ripped My Flesh is the only one I can wholeheartedly, 100% reccomend. I wouldn't even reccomend Bongo Fury, even though it has Beefheart on it... Admittingly, I've only heard about 15 Zappa albums, and each one is full of clever ideas and some good songs sprinkled throughout but it's really difficult for me to get into his music for extended periods of time. Weasels Ripped My Flesh is amazing though, as is MOST OF "We're Only In It for the Money". I'd also reccomend Freak Out if you like those two albums. |
Freak Out!, Absolutely Free, We're Only in it for the Money, Hot Rats, Overnite Sensation, Apostrophe ('), Roxy & Elsewhere, or One Size Fits All would all make good Zappa starting points. I started with We're Only in it for the Money and I've been obsessed with Zappa since then.

Most of his 60s 70s stuyffs are great, but his last album "Yellow Shark" are not to be miss too.
|
My friend is completely obsessed with Zappa (he's also obsessed with Ween but that's a different story.. .ehhhhh...) and he did the greatest thing ever for me a long time ago... he made a "greatest hits" album of Zappa tracks that was two discs of just his favorite songs, and most of those were mindblowing. When I actually listened to the full length releases that some of those songs were from, I found a lot of them to be tedious. He's still a fucking great musician though, and you probably can't go wrong with any of his albums that don't have "guitar" in the title........

Transcribing the tracklist may be of assistance to Sonic Youth 37, atsonicpark. And you piqued my curiousity a bit too.
I kind of agree with Savage Clone that Zappa is too much into one type of lyric writing. I've ranked some albums before in a previous thread, but won't be doing so today. |
I tend to like his stuff with the Mothers of Invention more. Especially ''Freak Out!'', ''We're Only In It For The Money'', ''Overnite Sensation''.

weasels ripped my flesh!!!!

My favourite Zappa is We're Only In It For The Money.

Good suggestions by everybody so far.
I love everything up to and including Over Nite Sensation which is a pretty rediculous album, but it's still great. |
I'm not that into Zappa, but I think We're Only in It for the Money is fucking amazing.
|
I will have a psychedelic gleam in my eye at all times.
