I think Sonic Youth are too into feedback to ever be sarcastic with it.

I always thought that the song was a stab at the lame indie hipsters who listen to them.

perhaps its a mock of themselves... or the fact that most people who bought Stooges and VU records (or even SY) back in the day automatically thought they were artists and formed bands. could it be about janis, patti or even kim? dunno. i just love it for what it is.... btw who's joni? who's karen? who gives a shit? just great stuff and knowing might actually spoil it.

thats true. There's definatly romanticism in the mystery. More often than not if people find out these little secrets it does spoil it. But its interesting to hear other peoples take on bits and pieces

I've never heard any of their albums, they might be good, they sucked live but el guapo kinda sucked live and I loved one of their albums..
