40 years later: Pink Floyd's A Saucerful Of Secrets
Yesturday marked the 40th anniversary of Pink Floyd's classic LP A Saucerful Of Secrets. So let us discuss it a bit, do you think it's 'aged well' after all these years? with hindsight, does it stand as a Pink Floyd classic or a directionless change-over album?... etc etc
|
i like saucerful of secrets a lot, even more than piper at the gates of dawn. i like piper too, but at times its too, i dunno, child-like maybe? i think the period between piper and dark side is the best pink floyd.

Saucer... is my second favourite Pink Floyd album (behind Piper...). My favourite tracks are Jugband Blues and Set the Controls For the Heart of the Sun.
|
![]() I couldn't decide, so I bought this. I've had it since I was 16, and that was a very long time ago! |

It's be weird to hear either of them as one half of a double album like this... |
"jugband blues" is awful, "set the controls..." is genius.
they were better live than on record. |
This record really is a transitional one. Its the band trying to sound like syd without him being there."Corporal Clegg" is a rip off of the unreleased vegetable man. "Set The Controls" did show roger can write a good song but "Jugband Blues" is still my favorites off this album, what a sad coda to syd's brilliance though.
Anyone else notice there wasn't a huge anniversary for this record? There's a reason for that and it's because nobody cares, not even the members of pink floyd. |
My second favorite Floyd album - behind Meddle.
It's pretty good, very transitional and experimental, but obviously not as much as the earlier albums. Though I've gotta say the Pompeii version of A Saucerful of Secrets beats the hell out of the album version |
Very good album. My only gripes with it are that the title track is nowhere near as dynamic as the Ummagumma or Pompeii versions and I don't really like See-Saw much.

Yeah... I hate See-Saw. :( She goes up while he goes doooooooooooooown Maybe some underlying innuendo there, I dunno. |
Yesterday when I realized it was exactly 40 years ago, I popped in my CD and listened to the whole thing again. Let There Be More Light is a great opener. The only thing I don't like about this album is the kazoo solos in Corporal Clegg. It's definitely aged better than Ummagumma, although the live version of Saucerful on that album beats the original. But I think the Pompeii version is the best one.

unmagumma is the best shit they ever did, the live at pompei dvd rules too, i watched it the first time i shroomed. |
ummagumma is not their best by a long shot (not to say that it isn't excellent)
but. i like a saucerful of secrets. it comes off as less of a novelty than piper does. |
i love piper and thats where my love of the floyd stops but i have never heard this one.. ill give it a go tho.
|
i think that piper will always be the "cool" pink floyd album because barret will always be this acid casualty hipster icon of sorts, making piper the accetable floyd album among the underground folk. but if you actually sat down and listened to all their albums, its not hard to see its much inferior to a lot of thier stuff. once again, not sayin i dont like it.

I agree with you, I'm just about the biggest Syd Barret fan to walk the face of the earth, and I absolutely adore Piper. However, though it gets me precisely no scenester points, I refuse to accept it is better than Dark Side of The Moon. Syd Barrett's music is wonderful, however he is the only thing thats vaguely rock n' roll or cool about Pink Floyd, and therefore people will always latch onto his work for hipster points... |
im listening to piper now
