Painting from Sonic Youth series sells for $8.4 mil







I missed this last week other amid Carol Vogel’s extensive reporting on London’s big art auctions. Richard Prince’s “Overseas Nurse,” part of the series from which Sonic Youth got the cover of their 2004 album Sonic Nurse, sold at Sotheby’s on July 1 for $7.4 million, which including Sotheby’s fee comes to $8.4 million. (You think Ticketmaster is bad?) That may sound like a lot, but it was actually “under the low estimate,” Vogel reports.

Can someone please explain to me why paintings constantly sell for millions of dollars? Just curious.

I don't really care for the Sonic Nurse cover all that much, really. Makes sense as an album cover but as a painting?

thin of it as delirium while in a hospital full of hot nurses.

That painting is fantastic especially watching the paint drip above the nurses' head...

It's not the Sonic Nurse cover for christ's sake! Its inside the gatefold sleeve, but the cover is a completely different peice...

Oh, I really like that one.

I also like "Surfing Nurse" (#4 at the link, back cover of SN), "Nurse of Green Meadow" (you can see it on the wall at the far "right on #5), Dude Ranch Nurse" (#10) (I've also seen "Dude Ranch Nurse" with a green background, but am unsure if it is an actual other painting), and "A Nurse Involved" (#12).

I'm not too wild about "Overseas Nurse." Although someone certainly is...8.4 mil, wow.

i like the cover of the album better than the piece.

“under the low estimate”, hehe, crazy amount of money. it's so mad that there's people who can afford $8 mil. for a painting! but yeah, probably it's good price for a painting from 2002 compare to one of Monet paintings, which was sold for $80 mil.

Still another nurse painting by Richard Prince was also in the top ten, this one titled Overseas Nurse and dating from 2002. It sold for £4,241,250 ($8,457,901), a new record for the artist. The buyer, according to press reports, was New York dealer Jose Mugrabi.

I didn't think this one was the best one (or one of the better ones) of the Nurses.

8.4 mil huh? Or you could just pay $17 at the record store and get the big n' beautiful vinyl edition of SN. The back of the album is very similar to that nurse painting, which is just okay IMHO. I like the Nurse on the cover of the album itself, reminds me of the video game series "Silent Hill", which always in turn kind of reminded me of SY, so for me this is like the perfect album cover! ^_^

Those paintings are truly amazing. But it was cheaper for me to just frame my Sonic Nurse poster.

I wouldn't pay more than 8 bucks for it.
