Tell me how to feel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well my mom had like...something wrong with her nose awhile ago. She had to go to a dermatologist, and they biopsied it, and the nose on her skin was cancerous, I guess. And now she is going in tomorrow for some minor surgery where they are going to cut off some skin, and see if there is any cancerous stuff left, and they'll keep doing it until it is all gone.

My parents really haven't talked to me about it much, but I've figured out all of the practical aspects of it, and that is really all I know. So I'm not sure how to feel because they aren't really acting like it is a serious deal. I'm not so sure how worried I should be.

I didn't want to talk to my friends about it because I don't want to bring it up if it turns out not to be a huge deal. And I hate it when people worry too much for me. But I wanted to get it out somewhere! So there!

Sorry, man. It's not super serious as long as they removed enough and treated it properly afterward. Still a bit scary though.

acousticrock87 07.17.2008 10:28 PM

It doesn't sound like anything to worry about, but of course it can freak you out. Even if it turns out to be nothing though (and it probably will) everyone understands being worried and wanting to talk about it.

just look after yr mum in a low-key way.
come around and have coffee with her.
try to see if the topic comes out somehow.
Just listen, don't comment
be nice
she'll appreciated it and she may come up with more info about the suregry and its implications.
Either it's no big deal OR it is but they don't want to bother / scare you.
The only way to know is to stay around
don't ask though just be there.

If theres something to worry about, then I should imagine your mother would be. If shes chilled, you should be too. Just look after her and stuff.

Dead-Air 07.18.2008 05:34 AM

If you have a particular friend who you can trust not to turn your family's apprehensions into soap opera gossip, then telling him or her might well be good for you. Bottling up inside stuff that bothers you is generally a bad thing to do, though I understand why you want to keep this stuff as your own business in general.

"tell me how to feel"

that's a strange question.

feel however you feel-- if you're not alarmed then you're not alarmed.

worry never solved anything.

Be happy for her, it's a free nose job.

I thought the title was "Tell Me How You Feel" for a second. No, instead its about you.

Maybe you should freak over every little health thing with your parents? My dad just recently dislocated the lens in his left eye and has been seeing a doctor to get his vision back. While it isn't life threatening, there is a chance of losing his sight in the eye. I'm partially concerned but my dad doesn't seem bothered and what it seems for your situation is that the cancerous skin was caught early and manageable enough to not be worried about.

Aww, you're sweet. I'll be sure to send you a sense of humor at Christmas.

On a serious note, this is a harsh truth, but parents tend to disguise their anxiety in front of their children so as not to worry them, so really, there's no way to know just how much this is upsetting your mom. But if she is akin to the many other mothers of this culture, she is probably more selflessly concerned about your mental well-being than her own health, so if you want to lessen her stress, "support" her emotionally, but don't let on that you're worried.

Anyone that tells you not to worry is unrealistic. In this situation it's inevitable, and trying to assuage yourself is really just a convenient and popular tool of psychological suppression. To be blunt, of course you should be worried. Look forward to many sleepless nights.

I wasn't seriously asking people to tell me how to feel. It was really supposed to poke fun at these kinds of threads, and at how dumb it is of me to post it here.

Of course, whatever is said here isn't going to change the way I feel, but I just needed to get my own bit out.

Alex's Trip 07.18.2008 12:21 PM

Whatever you say, hon.

Cantankerous 07.18.2008 02:17 PM

well. don't stress out too much because it would probably stress her out, and you don't want to do that to your lovely mother!

Alex's Trip 07.18.2008 02:26 PM

Well everything seems fine now. My mom seems just ticked that she is going to have a scar on her nose...

Cantankerous 07.18.2008 02:30 PM

it will fade, i've got a scar on my nose from nose rings i've had in the past and you can't even see it
it can also be covered easily with foundation
