A Question About Post-Beatles Lennon

Does anyone know what the best book is in terms of covering his post-Beatles years?

atsonicpark 08.08.2008 09:46 AM

Mmm.. John Lemon and Mango Star...

I dont think Communism should be discussed here.

Jann Wenner tapes maybe?

the Playboy interviews; they have been compiled in book form.

Imagine: John Lennon is one of my favorite documentaries.

Avoid the Goldman, of course.

noisereductions 08.08.2008 02:13 PM

atari, what's the Goldman you speak of? I'm not familiar.

atari 2600 08.08.2008 02:18 PM

the lives of john lennon

(it doesn't really deal with post-Beatles anyway per my understanding)

U2 (yes) did a protest song about it called God Part II

the same muckraker did a bio of Elvis' last day which claims that he actually committed suicide

hmm. that one slipped by me. I'll know to stear clear. By the by, did anyone watch CHAPTER 27 ? I enjoyed it.

Yes, i agree about the Goldman book. The Jenner interview is great, but more useful as a retrsospective look by Lennon over his career. The things I'm particularly interested in are Lennon's absorption in radical politics and his 'Primal Scream' treatment. I've been looking for a book dedicated to this period but can't seem to find anything, although Fawcett's 'One Day at a Time' seems like it might be decent in this respect.

Thanks. I have that interview photocopied somewhere and it never fails to impress me. Was just just scrolling through it again.

The 1968 one is new to me though. I'd read excerpts before, but never the whole thing. I just finished it and probably found it the most interesting of the three. Certainly, apart from everything else, Lennon was one of the truly great interviewees in rock. I can't think of anyone else able to match him in that respect. Dylan, maybe ... maybe. And, much later on, Morrissey of course.

If you're at all interested in this stuff yourself, I just found a link that focuses directly on his therapy.

Goldman.. or Coleman?
i figured that was a good book, though i haven't read it yet.

the jan wenner interview is good, but so conditioned. he was obviously bitter and most of what he said were things he thought then in the moment. it was a very conditional interview.

I just recently read the New York Years with Bob Gruen and found it to be pretty good.

http://www.amazon.com/John-Lennon-Ne.../dp/1584794321

It gives a good pictoral (if that what you are after) history from 1970 on..
Gruen was in his inner circle so you get all the dirt with him making quotes
such as "laughing all the way to the bank"

After reading it I found it interesting that SY were forming with the same month or two of his death in the same city

I am not sayin' that which book is biiiggger, has more paaaages, or a shiiinier cover

I'm just sayin'
