DIY Architecture

The ideas behind the DIY aesthetic are good ones. The problem is, as with most things, the real ideas behind them have moved to the side and now we have a bunch of hipsters into DIY because they want everyone to see the shirt they made on their blog. Have people forgotten that everything used to be DIY? People made their own clothes and built their own houses, not to show them off to people, but because they NEEDED THEM.

That being said, this is pretty cool:

Yes, fuck those D.I.Y. hipsters! Doing it themselves? Fucking posers! Only I'm allowed to do it myself! So, do it yourself!

In all seriousness (I have to say that now so people know when I'm kidding), this is pretty cool.

Doing things for themselves is not what bugs me. It's doing it for the sole purpose of showing people what you did. It just irks me sometimes.

But I would totally live in that house, even if I did have to fear it falling in on me.

atsonicpark 08.08.2008 11:06 AM

Nah, I knew what you meant... that's why I said I was kidding.

The house is badass!

And it looks like Nikolai Sutyagin has this half Chuck Norris half David Hasselhoff thing going on. That means he punched the ground and the house built itself, but then he went inside, got wasted, and ate a sandwich off of it's floor.

atsonicpark 08.08.2008 11:15 AM

I want to use that as a lyric.

Go for it, it's cc-licensed.

Is cutting off the labels of one's clothing a hipster thing to do? Because I've started to do that.

afterthefact 08.08.2008 11:23 AM

Even if hipsters do it, it doesn't make in a hipster thing to do. If you showed everybody that you cut the labels off of your stuff and explained that you didn't want to be a corporate whore and that's why you did it and you think everybody should do it, that's being a hipster. Actually, that may even be worse.

Either way, don't cut the label off of your mattress, it's not worth the prison time.

i like to keep the washing instruction labels. if you don't wash your clothes you're not a hipster-- you're a filthy hippie instead.

pbradley 08.08.2008 11:44 AM

I never wash anything, if it gets dirty I throw it away and by a new one.

pbradley 08.08.2008 01:59 PM
