I beg anyone to help me differentiate between the numerous hair metal bands... also emo bands.

The Beatles and The Partridge Family

The Ryes and Pulp.

I've only ever heard one song by the Ryes - something with a girl's name in the title - but I was convinced throughout that I was listening to Pulp.

Distorted Pony sounds like Shellac , especially the drum.

Well, I meant their first ep, sounds identical to Big Black, same drum machine and all.

Their later stuff sounds more Rapemany I guess.

Flogging Molly and the Dropkick Murphys. THE SAME.

A Place to bury strangers = Disco Inferno

with the only exception that A place to bury strangers have a bit more skronk. But the melodies are basically the same.
