KUKL (pre-Sugarcubes Bjork) vinyl re-released today

These records are brutal masterpeices, despite what you may think of Bjork, this band is more comparable to Crass, and the sludgiest, dirtiest avant-noise band you can think of. Anyway, wanted these on vinyl for a long time, they're extremely hard to come by. Holidays In Europe and The Eye have been repressed, they're expensive, though...

That's awesome. Holidays in Europe too. I never saw Kukl, but I saw the sugarcubes support swans in the 80s when they were more like them, and they really were incredible. Fantastic band.

Thats really really cool. But I fail to beleive the Sugarcubes were ever 'like' Swans... I mean, really?

demonrail666 08.17.2008 10:22 PM

LOL, no not like Swans, like Kukl. They were just supporting the Swans. My bad.

atari 2600 08.17.2008 10:22 PM

I suppose when Paul and I get into something, it becomes really cool...

haha

I realize it's a coincidence...

dionysusundone 08.17.2008 10:42 PM

KUKL is/was awesome. I'll have to be on the look out for this.

I have the originals but I want these badly. I'm sure the remasters are amazing.

Now if only it wouldn't cost me $140 for two albums.

MellySingsDoom 08.18.2008 05:33 AM

Yep, I'm definitely buying the re-issued album!

Pookie 08.18.2008 07:21 AM

I bought their albums at the time (cos I'm cool;) ). Holidays In Europe is a really fantastic album, The Eye is ok but not great.

And for the record, it is NOTHING like Crass in any way. More like a stripped back, much more minimal Sugarcubes.

I would recommend adding Holidays In Europe to any record collection.

I wasn't really comparing it to Crass, I was trying to say you'd be largely more accurate to compare them to that band than what many people know Bjork for.

This Is Not Here 08.18.2008 07:26 AM

Can anyone enlighten me as to how KUKL is supposed to be pronounced?

Pookie 08.18.2008 07:37 AM

It's a bit like Kirk (as in Captain Kirk) but a bit more phlegmy I think.

gualbert 08.18.2008 08:14 AM

According to John Peel , via Wikiquote.

I'm in real trouble with this next one, because the name of the band... well it's spelt K-U-K-L. Now how would you pronounce that? I mean given that it's some kind of nordic language that you're not entirely familiar with. Well I checked around a bit, with people who know the band and they said, well, it's pronounced 'Curcle'. So I said 'Curcle', I mean that seems, you know, feasible... daft, but feasible... so K-U-K-L, Curcle, so I went ahead and that's what I said when I did a radio programme featuring this domestically, and a member of the band phoned up and said 'No, it's not Curcle at all, it's...' he didn't say it like this at all but he said '... it's pronounced Krchk'. And I said, well how can it be pronounced Krchk, I said, cause there's no 'R' in it... there's an 'L'... and the 'L' is at the end, you know, all that kind of thing. Anyway, he says it's Krchk, so this is Krchk, and frankly the title of the piece I have no intention at all of trying to pronounce, it's spelt S-O-N-G-U-L-L and it's almost certainly pronounced 'Lester'. (plays the record) That's Kukl, pronounced Krchk and this is John Peel's Music, pronounced “Excuse me, but isn't that my ladder?”

_slavo_ 08.18.2008 08:20 AM

Coo-ckle, i'd say.

atari 2600 08.18.2008 11:46 AM

Thank you, gualbert, for reminding me just how amazing this board can be...repped.

Had a good laugh imagining JP as he uttered the words long ago.

I've been going with the anglicized "Cue-Kul."

PAULYBEE2656 08.18.2008 12:10 PM

holidays in europe is excellent.. i found it in a 50 cent bin in some charity shop about 18 months ago.. i bought it..

now its been reissued at a stupid price... ha the irony!!

isnt it like expensive ramones tees in topshop all covered in glitter and ripped to make them look "authentic"..

ha, no its not.. and i am only joking of course....

go buy it.....

Glice 08.18.2008 12:45 PM

I picked up Holidays in Europe recently for a surprisingly reasonable price (I'd assumed originals were hen's-teeth rare, but apparently not). It's a fine piece, oh yes.

The 'u' in Kukl is like the 'oo' in 'book' - not like the 'oo' in 'loot', so you'd say it like the word "cook" but with an 'L' on the end. Not that it matters much anyway; slavo's and atari's suggestions are okay.

HaydenAsche 08.18.2008 04:10 PM

I've got a cd-r somewhere with Holiday in Europe on it somewhere. KUKL is alright. I don't know about comparing them to Crass, though.

batreleaser 08.18.2008 04:20 PM

i just listened to this. didnt like it. kinda a half assed attempt at crust punk, but too artsy. wouldnt say its anything NEAR to 'avant noise' or at all like crass.
