Any other 101 String collectors here?
I tend to grab one or two of their records every time I hit a flea market. Anyone else in the 101 Strings Orchestra?
Don't tell me nobody else here is into 50/60's easy listening, exotica, lounge, etc?
Les freaking Baxter?? Arthur Lyman? Ferrante and Tiecher? Esquivel? Martin Denny? Joe Meek?? Billy Vaughn? Anyone? No one? C'mon!
Ah, forget it. Let's just talk about some noise band or something.
Patience, dear.
I'm not down with 101 (will pick some up soon) but you'll probably find that there are at least two Alpert devotees here (shout out to the man 'rail - big up y'self) and the Baxter man can't go amiss. There's a thread on Charity shop gold somewhere if you're interested. |
Don't know the Charity shop thread...
LES BAXTER is the shiz. Ever since I watched THE DUNWICH HORROR, I HAD to track down as much of his stuff as I could. Still hunting. He was amazing. Herb Alpert is certainly excellent as well. Just finally found WHIPPED CREAM in mint condition on vinyl last year! |
arthur lyman is cool, but 101 strings i find is generally 100% unlistenable
It's not unlistenable. It's muzak cheese, no doubt. But unlistenable, no way.
I'm down with all that stuff. Lyman's definitely my fave of the one's you list.
101 Strings are really hit and miss though. Some of it is just boring without enough kitsch to make it fun. Astro Sounds from Beyond the Year 2000 is fucking awesome though. |
um you know i think i actually have an album of theirs but i don't know why. boring as hell.
ASTRO SOUNDS is insane. The bulk of their catalog is not meant to be, um, interesting. Just pretty much background music. That's sort of the appeal I guess. Cheap string versions of the hits. Like how now we have the Vitamin String Quartet. Same crap really.
Les Baxter is my favorite as far as actually being incredibly awesome. I swear some of the drum parts he came up with (like on DUNWICH or HELL'S BELLES) sounds like something Madlib would be dropping today. Insanely forward thinking. |
