my friend just gave me a bunch of movies

I have this friend who gets in these weird stages every few months where he wants to get rid of everything he owns. I don't mean SELL everything he owns, he just gives it away to whoever wants it, doesn't even care if they're good friends or what, he just basically... if you go into his house and you see something and want it, he's like "sure, go ahead."

So, I was over there last night and he's like "Hey, it's Labor Day, so.. I'm getting rid of all my movies. Uh... just see if there's anything you want." Some other dude was over there and took a Godzilla box set that had to have cost over $100. For free! This guy wants nothing in return! I don't know why he's like that but anyway, I scored these movies off of him:

Guy Maddin's Careful!
Ran
Mr. Vampire
Sakuya: Slayer of Dreams
Lizard in a Woman's Skin
Mule Skinner Blues
Psycho Beach Party
Kaiju Big Battel vol. 1
The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai
The Residents: Demons Dance Alone
The Residents: Kettle of Fish
Don't Torture a Duckling
By Brakhage
some burnt Stereolab DVD with all their videos on it, not sure what it is really
Sun Ra: Space is the Place
Tetsuo II: Body Hammer
New York Ripper
Meet the Feebles
Shark Skin Man and Peach Hip Girl
Captain N: The Game Master complete series
The Church
Mod Fuck Explosion
Long Dream

The only thing he wouldn't let me have is this Power Rangers best-of burnt DVD.

I felt bad, I kept going, "Uh.. are you SURE you don't want this?" He's like "I don't care." and I'd pick up some obscure movie and be like, "Is this good?" And he went, "Yeah, it's great! You should definitely take that one!" Hahaha.

Great guy (not just because he gave me movies), I just dunno exactly why he's like that. Keep in mind most of the things I listed were ACTUAL COPIES though there's some burns in there as well.

I'll give him a bunch of free old toys in return.. even though I don't "have to". I guess it's just weird for people to be so generous to me, I'm not used to it... maybe there's lots of people like this. I dunno. He's not, like, rich or anything. He has a decent amount of money, but certainly not enough to buy a bunch of actual copies of DVD's and give 'em away haha.

Wow, what a crazy fuck.

He should sell that crap and at least make some of the dough back.

Rob Instigator 09.02.2008 12:33 PM

maybe he is just kind and generous. I hate selling my shitand prefer to give it away to someone who will love it, or at least enjoy it. especially books, music, or movies, I hate selling them. I would rather give them away.

acousticrock87 09.02.2008 12:33 PM

Haha that's awesome. Those are some legit movies, too. I mean that's weird as fuck, but there's no reason not to take him up on his offer. I can understand wanting to give him something for it, though. That's kind of weird.

atsonicpark 09.02.2008 12:34 PM

I give stuff away too, but it's generally not stuff I LOVE. I mean, I picked up Careful! and he's like "I LOVE that film. It's my favorite movie." And I start to put it back and he's like "No! Get that one! It's great! You gotta have it!"

afterthefact 09.02.2008 01:36 PM

Does he ever regret it? Down the road, does he ever say "Man, I wish I didn't give that away.."?

Cause I've gone through those moods where I feel like getting rid of a lot of stuff, and then regretted it later. I usually don't complain, because then I just look like a jerk asking back the stuff I gave away.

Are you all CLOSE friends? Because he may just figure that if he wants to watch it again, he could just come to your place.

atsonicpark 09.02.2008 02:26 PM

I don't think he regrets it but I'm not sure...

We're not CLOSE friends yet. I see him a lot. I dunno. We really like each other. But he'll literally... I mean, I was hanging out with a dude when we went over there and that dude doesn't know him at all. And he was like "you see anything, take it" to him as well.

I knew a bipolar girl that would give away everything she had ever so often. Then there are those who see possessions as burdens which is not too difficult to understand.

Hip Priest 09.02.2008 02:34 PM

Unless you're selling stuff because you need to, then I think it's good to give it away. The recipient will appreciate it, you'll feel good about yourself and after all, essentially these unwanted items are your rubbish.

I've never heard of most of the films.

atsonicpark 09.02.2008 02:36 PM

Right, but the thing that gets me is a lot of those films were one he really enjoyed. I mean... I dunno. I guess maybe he figures he's seen 'em before, he's never gonna watch em again? I dunno.

The only ones I'd never heard of were Sakuya: Slayer of Dreams, Mule Skinner Blues, and Long Dream. But he assured me that they were all "great films!!!"

nicfit 09.02.2008 03:06 PM

maybe that was not his house.

acousticrock87 09.02.2008 03:07 PM

Hahaha. That would be awesome.

MellySingsDoom 09.03.2008 03:47 AM

atsonicpark - the one's I've seen there which are great are "Ran", "Lizard In A Woman's Skin", "Don't Torture A Duckling" and "Tetsuo II". "New York Ripper" is pretty stupid really, but it was one of two moments of "fun".

atsonicpark 09.03.2008 03:49 AM

Yeah, I've seen Ripper before and I like it. It's sleazy. I've seen a few of those before, I had Tetsuo II and Ripper and Feebles on VHS but it's good to have 'em on DVD now.

I watched Ran last night. It was pretty crazy!! I watched Lizard in a Woman's Skin for the first time and loved it as well.

NY Ripper - "He stuck it up her joy trail....a serial killer that talks like a duck?...and you're an asshole, bye!"
Ran is simply spectacular. Did you hear the story of the fight scenes being so colourful, because Kurosawa was going blind at that point?

Well done on the Brahkage score too.

atsonicpark 09.03.2008 04:00 AM

"QUACK QUACK QUACK I GOT ANOTHER WHORE QUACK QUACK QUAKC"
..

Haha no I didn't hear that, that's crazy. Ran was crazy. Haha.

And yes, By Brakhage is just phenomenal. I've seen a lot of his stuff before but finally being able to sit down and enjoy videos of live births, film of broken up leaves, and autopsies.. my life is complete!
