classic albums, atsonicpark edition # 48: daniel johnston - yip / jump music
![]() DANIEL JOHNSTON "YIP/JUMP MUSIC" 1983, Self-released/Stress Records/Homestead Records/Eternal Yip Eye Music Well over an hour of beautiful minimal pop music by millionaire songwriter Daniel Johnston. Instead of focusing on the lo-fi sound of the music (which, in my mind, does add to the sound of the album but...) or Daniel's "crazzzzinessssssss", I'd just like to mention that these are all absolutely brilliant songs. Some compare Daniel to the Beatles; I dunno about THAT, but I will say that he has a genius mind for creating harmonically sound pop music. I enjoy most of Daniel's albums (mainly the early ones; after the major label releases and stuff, the music became too textured and I think the appeal of the minimalism of his music was gone)....... but this is the one where I think every track is really special. I have to give special mention to "Almost Got Hit By A Truck". |
he's playing here in a while, but i dont have time :(
anyways, request: could you maybe make a new thread and sum up all the classic albums you've done in a list if you remember all of the ones you posted?? thanks |
Wait til you get to 50, then do it. That'll be nice and...even.
I have mixed feelings about Johnston. I like several of his songs a lot, but most of them I can't really get used to. They're decently written, but nothing amazing, in my opinion. He does have his strokes of genius, though, there's no doubt about it. |
|
agree totally about the major labels fucking his shit up. But yeah these early records are fantastic.
|
I'd pick this record out of his catalogue as well if I had to choose one. I LOVE "Speeding Motorcycle" and "Almost Got Hit By A Truck".
|
I can only listen to a few track by Johnston at a time.
|
yknow, i like daniel johnston. i have all his stuff, but only because my brother is an uber-fan and burnt everything for me. but at the same time as i apprecaite his work, i almost never have ANY desire to listen to it.

that album is the only one worth owning. and even it is very hit or miss, and hard to sit through the whole thing.
rocket ship and Casper are perfect though YOU CAN'T BUY RESPECT LIKE THE LIBRARIAN SAID, BUT EVERYBODY RESPECTS THE DEAD. |
Yeah, "Casper" rules.
|
I think this is the easiest one to listen to from beginning to end, even if it's the longest. It's so diverse.
Love the accapella songs. Even the 6 minute King Kong. |
accapella songs are intense. Some old blues ones are some of my favorite shit.
I think 1990 is my favorite Daniel Johnston album. Hi, How Are You? is my second favorite. Daniel Johnston writes songs on the same level as The Beatles and Bob Dylan to me. The albums great though.. |
yes
|
1990 is just too emotionally heavy at times to want to listen to it constantly. Haha.
I like this one cuz it's still fun. |
Quote:
Yip/Jump is way more light-hearted type recording Anyone heard the record he did with Jad Fair?? "It's Spooky".. It's some of the weirdest shit.. |
yeah, it's excellent.
