One song? I don't think I would. That's like trying to introduce someone to the entire works of Shakespeare by reading them a sonnet.
|
I did lend Dirty to a pal in school , I was 16 , and after that he seemed to consider me as a weirdo , so did his other pals .
|
This depends on the person and their current musical tastes. For the safer "indie rock" kids, something from Dirty is the obvious choice. Hardcore? Earlier SY. Top 40 fan? Hopeless. What do you want me to say? Let people discover their own music. Don't force SY on people. There, I said it. Maybe we could just stop with the "SY for beginners" threads.

Bull In the Heather, my friend doesn't like SY but whenever I play that song he has the '10, 20, 30...' stuck in his head for a few hours. He also likes Mariah Carey and the Arthur Doyles Handcream... but he was like 'WTF is this?' when Making the Nature Scene' came on.

Youth Against Fascism
sounds just fine |
everyone is a sonic youth virgin at some point in their life.
I would say for a beginner Death valley 69 or Mote (the whole goddamn beautiful thing) if they like these two they will probably enjoy much of sonic youth. |
the song that got me into sy was teenage riot.

on my stereo? schizophrenia live from 1991: The Year the Punk Broke, I think that it is the epitome of Sonic moments.. on my guitar: solo acoustic it would have to be Stones, I fucking love to play that song. I also love how all the post-1000 leaves tune can be played solo on the acoustic, since for the most part these tunes were written that way.. |
Schizophrenia, obviously.
