Didn't the same thing happen when Blair won the elections in Britain and people were like 'wow! changes, new era, and all that crap'. Get real, he will be capable of doing worse things if promped, and the chances are that he will have to make tougher decisions than his predecessors.

Shocking news: Everything is EXACTLY the same as it was when he became president, maybe even worse!

Damn all you debbie downers. It's at least exciting to see we have the first black, if even only half-black, president ever. This is huge.

He will have to make a LOT of unpopular decisions, but I'd rather an unpopular but competent leader anyday, as opposed to the populism of Blair et al. The US econemy in recession, the endless Iraq/Afghanistan situation, the even more endless Israel/Palestine issue, the problems with access to oil and other natural resources, the healthcare/welfare issue....Barack's in-tray is going to be a very full one, to be sure.

I'm afraid being a black leader isn't enough to be a good president. Same as if you were from any other ethnic background. Maybe you forget that even though he is a black president, that certainly doesn't mean he is going to do good things for all black people.

Melly - The competence of a president (and said thing is highly disputable) shows only while they're in office dealing with things, not by what they say they will do in an election campaign.

Indeedy - I think I mentioned in another thread that I await to see whether Barack has the substance to back up the rhetoric.

Well, there's a House and Senate Democratic majority. The only snag is that the Democrats have some 56 senators, but needed 60 to stave off any Republican filibusters.

as always as americans really don't have much choice but to believe and trust in the "system" at this point and not just who is in the oval office. i can't help to think that along with the important issues mentioned above, at stake is the supreme court positions that need to be replaced during Obama's term and that will certainly have a huge effect for years down the road. I strongly believe that the adminstration of the last 8 years has set this country back in many ways by 20+ years, and the recovery of such will be long and hard, unfortnately what Barrack is faced with is quite terrifying to think about.

I've been wondering how many people understand this. I guess: "not many".
