I want to see it. It looks good. I just hope it isn't boring as hell like Elephant and his Cobain movie.

jon boy 11.27.2008 09:07 PM

i think i might although i know i will be sad. i saw the documentary on him years ago and it was very good and he seemed like such a good guy.

Alex's Trip 11.27.2008 09:14 PM

Me during his other movies:

agree with Alex... but i am strangely optimistic about this one... the trailers are well-done at least... i'm waiting to read some reviews first

davenotdead 11.27.2008 09:44 PM

ok, reviews are good thus far.

Elephant was great! Last Days was okay. I didn't find them boring in the least, they just didn't say or do much. I think this film looks decent. The only Gus Van Sant film I love is Drugstore Cowboy.

I agree, especially regarding Elephant, which I really do think is a great movie, albeit in a rather quiet, almost anonymous kind of way. It sort of drifts past me whenever I watch it, but in a really nice way that is the complete opposite of being bored.

He's increasingly becoming one of the only filmmakers working at the moment whose films I'll watch just because it has his name on the poster. I'm not always completely bowled over by what he does, but never find it anything less than interesting either. (And that goes for Psycho, too)

atsonicpark 11.28.2008 08:21 AM

Right, I find him to be a very, very interesting director, his films almost always interest me. I used to absolutely hate him but I've matured a bit since then and see real beauty in a lot of his films. I think he's somewhat of a mainstream director, obviously, but a lot of his projects -- including Elephant and Last Days -- don't seem skewed towards a mainstream audience's mindset. I like that. One of the few directors who can get away with that, even with big star casts, and still make a little bit of a profit most of the time... another arguably being Scorsesce.

But anyway.

demonrail666 11.28.2008 08:42 AM

Yeah, it's weird. I went through a few stages, during which I've switched from liking him, then not caring too much for him, then getting back into him again. But even when I wasn't that fussed about him, it wasn't that I didn't like his films. Just that I wasn't that bothered about them - but even then, I've always thought that there's something quite beautiful about them.

It's gotten good reviews.

Gus Van Sant only movie that I truly enjoyed was elephant.

atsonicpark 11.28.2008 09:37 PM

have you seen drugstore cowboy, though?

✌➬ 11.28.2008 09:40 PM

No, I haven't.

atsonicpark 11.29.2008 07:33 AM

Oh. It's a masterpiece. See it. Unlike his other films. Trust me.

Derek 11.29.2008 07:53 AM

Yeah, it's different. Plus you get an awesome William Burroughs cameo!

Danny Himself 11.29.2008 08:22 AM

The release of this is really coincedental, just as I begin a series of paintings for college that depict Harvey's rise and fall.. sort of like the stations of the cross, but gay, and not Jesus. I will go to see this when (if?) it's released over here in the UK- he was a great man so this should be a great film.

Derek 11.29.2008 08:32 AM

This comes out in January in the UK.

Danny Himself 11.29.2008 08:41 AM

Oh! In select cinemas or full-out, Odeon release?

flophousefloozie 11.29.2008 12:32 PM

I was at a wine and cheese bar last night, in front of a window, and all I could see when I looked to my right was this giant poster of the film, and I couldn't help but feel brainwashed into seeing it.

Agreed.

It's been a while since one of his films truly knocked me on my ass, but he's still been a consistently solid filmmaker putting out good work.

That said, I'm pretty excited about this one.
