Blade runner named best Sci Fi movie ever. WTF??

I slightly disagree, I think it's the 2nd best, but that's not important.

No 2001 A Space Odyssey??? Are people insane? Didn't even make the list?

jon boy 12.04.2008 08:07 PM

its a shit film god knows why anyone likes it.

atsonicpark 12.04.2008 08:09 PM

Note that "best" almost always actually means "most well-known" or "most popular". Obvious but needs to be said.

I'm not that big a fan of Blade Runner either; much preferring stuff like Forbidden Planet (which shamefully only made it to number ten in the list) and This Island Earth (which outrageously never made the list at all!). I still want outer space to look like Altair-4 rather than the more desolate renderings that we see now. I want a universe populated by square jawed astronaut heroes, ego maniacal scientists with names like Moebius, toga wearing sweater girls and friendly robots.

My own Ten (because I'm bored and off work with a bad shoulder so have time for this kind of thing):

1. Forbidden Planet. (1956)
2. This Island Earth. (1955)
3. The Time Machine. (1960)
4. The Day the Earth Stood Still. (1951)
5. Quatermass and the Pit. (1967)
6. Dark Star. (1974)
7. 2001: A Space Odyssey. (1968)
8. Planet of the Apes. (1968)
9. A Boy and His Dog. (1975)
10. Flash Gordon (1980)

yeh i never could watch past 20 mintues of blade runner
i found it really boring

Rob Instigator 12.05.2008 09:47 AM

Bladerunner is the Apocalypse Now of Sci-fi films. It creates much discussion, and those who love it soak up every last little frame, sound, lione, costume, prop, etc. (like me) and those who do nto like it avidly HATE IT and decry it as the worst kind of crap.
no big whup

floatingslowly 12.05.2008 10:02 AM

dunno about best, but I love it dearly.

in fact, two days ago I watched the final cut edition. for as many of those that there have been, and as many times as I've seen it, I didn't think that I'd be that impressed. there was enough new stuff to keep me happy though.

besides all that, since when do other people's lists matter. if I cared about them enough, I'd be jumping people's shit daily in the non-sonic-soundz section. :D

blade runner haters can fuck off along with all those friendly robots.

The best part about this movie is the badies.
R Hauer , impressing as always , and the guy who has a problem with turtles , he looks so mean.

This is a fantastic list! The only one I haven't seen but is now on my list is Quartermass and the Pitt, and judging from your taste I'm totally psyched.

demonrail666 12.05.2008 11:48 AM

You should definitely try and catch Quatermass and the Pit. I watched it on TV again the other night and I really do think it's a masterpiece. The fact that it was made by Hammer means that it's sometimes thought of as a horror film (to the extent that it was recently voted the greatest British horror film ever made!) but in essence it's a pure science fiction film.

I see what you're getting at with the Apocalypse Now thing. They're somehow similar inthat they both seem to appeal to people who aren't necessarily fans of their respective genres. Although I don't necessarily think it's a love it or hate it thing, at least for me. I certainly don't hate Blade Runner. I just don't think it's that great - and it definitely wouldn't make my list of favourite sci-fi films (see above). Significantly I'm a far bigger fan of sci-fi movies than I am war films, which might (according to what I just said) explain why I'm quite a big fan of Apocalypse Now.

!@#$%! 12.05.2008 11:56 AM

i like blade runner alright, i've seen it several times, i loved it at one point, but it's not the alpha & omega some people make it to be.

speaking of sci-fi b-movies, what about raquel welch in fantastic voyage? i owe her the first boner of my childhood.

hurray for tv reruns

demonrail666 12.05.2008 12:06 PM

Yeah, Fantastic Voyage is another one that i really like too.

Like Forbidden Planet, it sort of reminds me of just what's been lost with the rise of CGI.

atsonicpark 12.05.2008 01:15 PM

I wonder if there's any love for Lifeforce...

mangajunky 12.05.2008 01:18 PM

I remember that flick being really cool when I was a kid. I haven't seen it recently. I particularly remember the dessicated vampire shattering to dust and a naked vampire chick with huge boobs.
