asp's classic albums # 57: van dyke parks - song cycle
![]() VAN DYKE PARKS "SONG CYCLE" 1968, Warner Brothers 40 years old and still sounds like it'd be ahead of its time if released today. Bizarre, quirky, fun pop that is all over-the-place and unlike anything you've probably ever heard. The first time I heard this, I thought of Jim O'Rourke's Eureka-type recordings, only to find out later in an interview that I read that's it's his favorite record of all time. Very eclectic, beautiful, well-made, etc. I dunno what else to say. An important, often overlooked record. |
Yes, I agree completely. I wish I could find some more of his stuff.

All i know about van dyke parks is it role in collaboration with brian wilson during the smile sessions freeing up his mind to more creative prospects. Would someone be so kind as to upload the album as a christmas gift?

Does anyone have the other album he did with Brian Wilson, Orange Crate Art? I haven't been able to find any links.

Godlike hipster stuff out of the 60's. It was 40 years to early, but it's still so awsome.

stellar shit. so is Discover America. Going to listen to Jump! and Tokyo Rose yet, anticipating these are underrated considering the brilliance of the other two releases.
and Jim is obsessed with Van Dyke Parks! Rightfully so. |
"...Constant commentary by the wayside. Nowadays them country boys don't cotton much to one two three four. Rest your team. Work out in the All Golden! You will know why hayseeds go back to the country.
Constant calm might still our stately union. Nowadays a Yankee dread not take his time to wend to sea. Forget to bear your arms in the All Golden. You will know why hayseeds go back to the country. Might as well not 'low for one more go round. That's all folks. Them hayseeds go back to the country. Ja git it? Alright." |
Yes, great stuff.
I remember the first time hearing it, i thought it was The Legendary Pink Dots. |
