World's Longest Exposures

"He made the photo not with a fancy digital camera but with an extremely rude, homemade device — a pinhole camera made from an empty soda can with a .25mm hole punched in it and one sheet of photo paper inside. He strapped it to a telephone pole and left it there for six months, from December 19, 2007 to June 21, 2008. If those dates sound familiar (or astronomically significant), they are — they’re the winter and summer solstices, respectively."

I think this is one of the most awesome things ever. I really want to try it.

woooooow.

think of how patient you have to be to wait that long for a photo!

Lurker 01.15.2009 06:58 AM

If you look just above the arch bit of the bridge there's kind of an outline of the bridge where there's no strips of light.

Wow, that is a really impressive pic. What a great effect there - goes to show that there's certain things that can never really be Photoshopped...

that looks great. now show me the fancy digital camera version.

!@#$%! 01.15.2009 11:21 AM

that is fucking beautiful.

not only the scientific aspect of it, not only the natural record (sort of like the rings of a tree), also the ghostly appearance of that bridge in the middle of it all. gorgeous.

and how the fuck did he know how to expose it right? (the size of the hole, the sensitivity of the paper). he must have been fucking with the process for years, or how??

amazing.

!@#$%! 01.15.2009 11:24 AM

ps- wow, he had more:

by the way, he sells pinhole cameras too, and these are some of the photos he took with them-- ha ha ha

I've never understood how pinhole cameras actually work.

Anngella 01.15.2009 03:42 PM

I want a print so bad but my mom's credit card doesn't allow purchases overseas :[

I'd almost be willing to mail someone the money.
